The human body is amazing. Even when you consciously try to do nothing at all, there are still myriad activities going on within the trillions of cells in your body. Each one of those trillions of cells is like a tiny factory, taking in raw materials and producing various results. New cells constantly replace the existing cells that make up your skin, organs, hair and bones, and they do so while fulfilling a multitude of different functions. For example, white blood cells create antibodies; gland cells produce hormones; heart muscle cells generate the biological electricity needed to keep your heart beating. Each time you draw a breath and every second in between, your cells are regenerating, and they're doing so at the rate of about 3 billion cells per minute.
How It All WorksYour good health depends on the proper function of your body's cells. When you get sick it's often because something has gone wrong on a cellular level. Although some factors that determine cellular health are beyond your control -- natural aging or certain genetic problems, for example -- the good news is that you can often help control the risk of cellular degeneration. Smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity, consistent stress, and exposure to polluted air all have a negative impact on your cells. Diet plays a big role, too. Without essential nutrients -- vitamins, certain amino acids, minerals and trace elements -- cell function becomes impaired, which leads the way for diseases to develop. But eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet (plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and fish) can go a long way in keeping your "cell factory" humming.
Consider yourself the foreman of the factory. Although your cells are working all on their own, day and night, you need to do your part to help them work efficiently. Every time you breathe, air travels to your lungs, where oxygen is absorbed and delivered to your cells. Similarly, every time you eat, your stomach turns your food to liquid and passes it along to your small intestine, where it's absorbed as fuel. It's the foreman's job to provide the cell factory with fresh air and healthy food so the cells are properly nourished and energized.
Highly Recommended SupplementsWhen your cells receive proper nourishment, they are then able to reproduce healthy cells. On the other hand, if your cells don't receive proper nourishment, you set yourself up for a factory revolt. For example, if your skin cells are not nourished properly, you may experience premature aging, acne, and slow wound healing. Brain cells that are under-nourished can cause you to be mentally sluggish or to have memory problems; the cells that make up your internal organs can become more susceptible to cancer. Yet even knowing this, it's not always possible to get all the nutrients you need to ensure cellular health. "Eat-on-the-run" meals, a high-stress lifestyle, and lack of proper rest and exercise all contribute to vitamin depletion -- and that means a cell factory revolt. What's the answer? Exercise regularly (15 minutes at least three times a week), get sufficient rest, practice stress management (deep breathing techniques or yoga can be helpful), and eat a balanced diet. And if your diet isn't balanced (a fact of life for many of us), take a nutritional supplement.
A daily supplement that's rich in the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E is especially beneficial. Antioxidants play a key role in minimizing cellular damage and abnormal cell growth because they guard against attack by "free radicals" (those destructive compounds that deplete your cells of oxygen) and help neutralize the harmful effects of smoke and other environmental pollutants. I recommend taking a multi-vitamin/mineral like Anox or for those of you who don't like taking pills, then I recommend Body Balance, which is a great tasting, whole food supplement loaded with 121 documented nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids and enzymes. Liquid processing frees these powerful nutricueticals making them completely bioavailable for immediate use at the cellular level to help rejuvenate your body. Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is another powerful antioxidant that acts as a cell-membrane stabilizer. Although CoQ10 is a natural substance found in all the cells of your body, its levels decline as you age. Taking a CoQ10 supplement can help ensure your cells are getting the energy they need, most especially in the organ where cells require a high level of energy metabolism -- your brain. I take a one a day supplement called DHEA Plus. DHEA is a hormone that your body slows down production of after the age of 40. Research shows by restoring DHEA to the levels of your youth, you can actually reverse the aging process. The Plus includes many nutrients that enhance the synergy of this product of which coenzyme Q10 is a part of. Grape seed extract and pine bark extract (also known as "Pycnogenol") both have high levels of "oligomeric proanthocyanidin" (OPC), which helps conserve and regenerate vitamins C and E, as well as being potent free-radical fighters in their own right. And grape seed extract, in particular, is noted for its ability to cross the blood/brain barrier to protect brain cells from free-radical damage. I recommend a product we have called Fossil Fuel, which is a great tasting liquid and has Activin; a patented form of grape seed extract. I was just informed this week, by a gentleman who has been suffering from stomach and colon problems, that since he started taking the Fossil Fuel he can now eat and drink anything he wants with no pain and suffering afterwards. If you read the first Health Guardian newsletter, you will remember an article I wrote about the healing power of MSM. I highly recommend you go to the newsletter archives and reread that extremely important article. MSM is by far one of the most important nutrients we can feed our body. Enhance the effect of MSM with the power of vitamin C, because vitamin C will rebuild your cells, but MSM is the glue that bonds vitamin C to the cells. It is like vitamin C is the brick and MSM is the mortar that helps you build a strong house. Together this dynamic duo can help you build a new and healthy you. But don't take my word for it, try some MSM2000 or FlexoPlus (if you prefer a liquid form of MSM) and Super C Crystals today and let me know your results. Finally I cannot leave you with out recommending a good calcium supplement to be a part of your daily arsenal. The most predominant mineral in our bodies is calcium. Scientists now know that calcium deficiency is a general and widespread causative factor in degenerative disease. This list includes osteoporosis, allergies, gallstones, cancer, heart disease, asthma and a host of ailments, not the least of which is the common cold and flu. Calcium depletion of the bones parallels aging. If the process of calcium depletion can be slowed down, it follows that youth can possibly be extended. Calcium is the neutralizer of acid in our bodies, and it is when our body's pH is in an acidic condition that diseases like cancer, heart disease and aging get a foothold. Unfortunately, because of sugar, caffeine, salt, alcohol, processed foods and a host of other chemicals found in our daily diet, our bodies are always in an acidic state. By taking a highly absorbable liquid calcium product like OsteoProCare or SeaCalif you prefer pill form, we can neutralize the acid and fight off disease and Father Time. Your cells can perform the miracles of healing and good health if their daily needs are met. Be proactive about your health and your cells will do the rest. All the products listed above can be found in our new catalog section under Products A-Z on our web site. Visit there today and read how these wonderful products can benefit your healthy lifestyle.
It's "The Beast" called yeast and it affects over 60 million Americans each year, and though it can occur in both men and women, it is much more prevalent among females. Few women would sign up to do battle with microscopic plant life, especially if they knew that the plant life would use guerrilla tactics at every opportunity. Unfortunately, most women are destined to fight this battle. An estimated 75 percent of women get at least one yeast infection during their lives and 40 percent of those will have multiple attacks. Understanding your enemy and knowing what weapons you have at your disposal to defeat them is your best strategy to win the war against "The Beast."
Candidiasis is a disorder caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans. It is important to note that a certain level of candida yeast is useful, natural part of the human system, helping to balance normal body function. However, when there is an abnormal increase in the amount of yeast, it can secrete a large volume of toxins into the body, which may weaken the immune system.
Once this happens, a self-perpetuating cycle can develop. The longer the yeast is in the system, the weaker the immune system becomes. The weaker the immune system, the higher the tolerance it has to the yeast itself. This allows yeast colonies to propagate, releasing more toxins and further impairing the immune system. The result is a wide variety of conditions at different levels of severity and discomfort. When it comes to chronic or recurring infections, the heart of the problem is often the intestines rather than the vaginal area. Candida albicans, the organism that most frequently causes yeast infections, can sometimes become overgrown in your intestines. Yeast that exists in the gastrointestinal tract can migrate into the vagina. Yeast infections can also mimic urinary tract infections or sexually transmitted diseases, so it's important to get an accurate diagnosis from a medical practitioner before beginning treatment.
Oral antibiotics are a common cause of increased yeast production. While fighting harmful bacteria, they also kill off much of the normal bacteria in the system as well. Since yeast has a different biochemical structure than bacteria, it is not affected by the antibiotics. Therefore, when these medicines destroy bacteria, the yeast is left with more room to spread and food upon which to grow. This is a significant point because as the candida yeast may manifest itself in various conditions, antibiotics are often used for symptomatic relief of those conditions. The antibiotics then allow the candida to reproduce elsewhere, causing recurring infections and other maladies.
There are certain physical conditions that make it easier for candida to spread. Pregnancy and menopause create an environment in which estrogen levels vary greatly from the norm, this may cause a higher rate of infection. And, in general, women are more susceptible at the end of each month's menstrual flow. Diabetes can also lead to increased risk for candidiasis. Other factors that weaken the immune system and create the perfect environment for candida overgrowth are stress, and a diet containing large amounts of sweets and processed foods. Oral contraceptives can further promote yeast growth.
Since candida can cause multiple systemic illnesses, a whole gamut of symptoms, ranging from the general to those affecting specific areas, are possible. These include low energy and fatigue, irritability, anxiety, fear, depression, brain fog, memory loss, headaches, lightheadedness, muscle and joint (arthritis), poor circulation, sensitivity to chemicals, urinary tract infections, rectal itching, white coating on the tongue or esophagus, heart palpitations, and irregular pulse.
Symptoms that show up in the digestive tract include gas, bloating, periodic constipation and diarrhea, indigestion, and intestinal cramps. In the respiratory tract, problems caused by candida range from chronic post nasal drip and coughs to sore throats, colds, and asthma. The skin can be affected too, with eczema, itching, rashes, acne, and fungal infections. A variety of gynecological symptoms are possible with candida, the most common one being a vaginal yeast infection characterized by itching, redness, irritation, and a cheesy, white discharge.
Once candida has become a flaming yeast infection and the vaginal itching, redness and pain is driving you absolutely nuts, doctors commonly recommend over-the-counter medications such as miconazole (Monistat) and clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin) or the new one-dose, prescription only fluconazole (Diflucan), all of which will have you sitting comfortably again in less than a week. But since these medications won't kick candida out for good, and since yeast infection recurrence is common, doctors say you have to be a bad host if you want to stay yeast-free. "Treating the vagina alone is often a waste of time and money," says William Crook, M.D. author of The Yeast Connection and the Woman. "Although vaginal suppositories may help, we also need to concentrate on putting the right things in your body to take care of the source of the problem." According to the experts, that means boosting your immunity through good diet and nutritional supplements. The following are my recommendations based on extensive research from various sources.
Environment
Diet
A probiotic supplement containing the "friendly" bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum can help limit the growth of candida. When the level of acidophilus is down, candida starts growing like wild. One way to get more acidophilus is to eat live-culture yogurt as mentioned earlier. Acidophilus also comes in supplement form for those of you who do not like yogart or find taking a capsule more convenient. Taking oral doses of acidophilus for just two to four weeks can help decrease candida in both your vagina and your intestines. This will make you less prone to repeat infections. Look for acidophilus capsules that are refrigerated and contain at least one billion organisms per capsule. Take two capsules one hour before breakfast and two capsules one hour before dinner, for one month. Acidophilus capsules can also help with prevention. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, you can help prevent a yeast outbreak by starting the acidophilus capsules at the same time as your prescription. Continue taking the capsules for two weeks after stopping the prescription.
