Ulcerative Colitis See Colitis

Ulcer
The term “peptic” ulcer distinguishes this condition from ulcerations that affect other parts of the body. Peptic ulcers are erosions in the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). These ulcers often bleed and may cause sharp burning pain in the area of the stomach or just below it. Peptic ulcer should never be treated without proper diagnosis.

Peptic ulcer is often caused by infection from Helicobacter pylori. People with peptic ulcer due to infection should discuss conventional treatment directed toward eradicating the infection—a combination of antibiotics and bismuth—with a medical doctor. Ulcers can also be caused or exacerbated by stress, alcohol, smoking, and dietary factors.

Ultrasound
Imaging technique that utilizes sound waves much as a radar does. Is a very useful technique to examine the kidneys.

Undescended testicle
Oftentimes, through some factor of heredity, one of the testicles will not descend in the fetus and the child is then born with an undescended testicle. If, during early childhood the testicle does not descend of its own accord, the child is sometimes made to undergo painful and unnecessary surgery to bring it down. We know of one case where the testicle was operated upon and then never developed later in life. That is, it atrophied, and remained almost imperceptible upon examination.

[Dr. Christopher]

Here is where we would use the wonderful glandular formula of Mullein & Lobelia. We apply this as a fomentation, that is, we make a tea of the herbs (one ounce to the pint) and concentrate it down to one half its original volume. A flannel or cotton cloth is dipped into the solution and put on the area, perhaps keeping the area warm with Turkish towels. The tea or capsules can be used internally as well.

Uranium
  • Year discovered: 1789
  • Atomic No.: 92
  • Symbol: U
  • Atomic weight: 238.03
  • Melting point: 1,132.3º C

Uranium is the heaviest of the natural elements. Natural uranium contains 99.3-percent isotope 238 and 0.7-percent isotope 235. For nuclear reactor use, isotope 235 is ideal since it is fissionable. Isotope 238 is considered fertile because it can be converted to fissionable plutonium. Silver in color, uranium is fluorescent in many of its compounds. It may spark when struck with a tool and self-ignite in powder form.

Ureter
The fibromuscular tube which conveys the urine from the kidney to the bladder. It begins with the pelvis of the kidney, a funnel-like dilatation, and empties into the base of the bladder, being 16 to 18 inches long.

Ureterocele
A cystic dilation of the bladder end of the ureter that often is obstructive. It may be normally placed or ectopically placed in the bladder.

Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction
An obstruction occurring at the point where the renal pelvis narrows down to form the ureter. It is a common site of congenital obstruction

Ureterostomy
An opening of the ureter to the skin to allow drainage of urine.

Ureterovesical junction obstruction
An obstruction occurring where the ureter joins the bladder.

Urethra
The membranous canal conveying urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body.

Urethritis
Infection of the urethra

Urethrraghia
Inflammation of the urethra characterized by a bloody discharge. Cause is unclear.

Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections of the kidney, bladder, and urethra. They are generally triggered by bacteria and are more common with any partial blockage of the urinary tract. In some people, UTIs tend to recur.

Annoying urinary tract infections (UTIs) are becoming a common female problem. Research has revealed that UTIs can be quickly cured and prevented with cranberry. It acidifies the urine and inhibits bacteria from adhering to the wall of the bladder.

Probiotics have helped in some cases of UTI.

Urine
The fluid excreted by the kidneys, passed through the ureters, stored in the bladder, and discharged through the urethra. Urine, in health, has an amber color, a slight acid reaction, a peculiar odor, and a bitter, saline taste.

Uterus
The hollow muscular organ in female mammals in which the fertilized ovum normally becomes embedded and in which the developing embryo and fetus is nourished. In the nongravid human, it is a pear-shaped structure, about 3 inches in length, consisting of a fundus body, isthmus, and cervix. Its cavity opens into the vagina below, and into the uterine tube on either side of the cornu. It is supported by direct attachment to the vagina and by indirect attachment to various other nearby pelvic structures.

Uva Ursi
Uva ursi, also known as mountain cranberry or bearberry, is a shrub that typically grows in elevations of about 6,000 feet . Uva ursi is an herb that concentrates on the urinary system. Uva Ursi contains vitamin A, iron, manganese, selenium and silicon. Uva Ursi also provides an antiseptic substance called arbutin, which supports the expulsion of toxins from the urinary tract.

As a nutritional supplement and muscle relaxant, uva ursi soothes, strengthens, and tightens irritated and inflamed tissues. Supporting the urinary system, uva ursi promotes healthy bladder, liver and kidney functions.

Uva ursi neutralizes acidity in the urine, increasing urine flow, therefore reducing bloating and water retention making it beneficial for weight loss.

Uva ursi's astringent properties may also assist in the treatment of some bed wetting problems.
