Cadmium
  • Year discovered: 1817
  • Atomic No.: 48
  • Symbol: Cd
  • Atomic weight: 112.4
  • Melting point: 320.9º C

Cadmium is bluish-white soft metal that can be cut with a knife. It is recovered primarily through the smelting of zinc. The principal use of cadmium, which was discovered in Germany in 1817, has been in nickel-cadmium batteries for portable communications, electronic and electrical equipment. Other applications include pigments, coatings and plating, stabilizers for plastics and similar synthetics, alloys, lasers and solar cells.

Calcium
Maintaining strong teeth and bones is essential for the prevention of osteoporosis, a progressive bone disease that just about everyone faces as they grow older. Getting enough calcium throughout life greatly reduces the risks of developing this condition — and can also help maintain healthy gums, a regular heartbeat, and proper nerve transmission. In addition, calcium lowers blood cholesterol, prevents heart disease, and is essential for muscle growth.

Substances which serve as mechanisms to stabilize pH are called buffers. Buffers have the capacity to bond ions and remove them from solution whenever their concentration begins to rise. Conversely, buffers can release ions whenever their concentration begins to fall. Buffers thus help to minimize the fluctuations in pH. This is an important function because many biochemical reactions normally occurring in living organisms either release or use up ions. Calcium is the body's main buffer. This is why there is a calcium crisis in health. Low pH = High Acidosis = Lower Oxygen = More Calcium Loss to buffer the acidosis.

[Dr. Garner]

Eat calcium-rich foods, such as unhulled sesame seeds, cheeses such as mozzarella and ricotta, kelp, sardines, parsley, brazil nuts, salmon, garbanzos, kale, eggs, many beans, sunflower seeds, etc.(milk is highly overrated as a calcium source and is a common allergen and not handled well by people with blood types O, A and AB; fermented milks such as yogurt, kefir, buttermilk and acidophilus milk are handled better and are good calcium sources). Calcium supplementation is advisable, with vitamin D (best as D3), magnesium, and betaine hydrochloride to help its assimilation; 1000-1500 mg. calcium per day.

California Flower Essences
Perhaps the best known of these additional essences are the California flower essences produced and researched by the Flower Essence Society, (916) 263-9162. The FES also imports healing herbs from the United Kingdom, including a full line of Bach remedies. Patricia Kaminski and Richard Katz of the FES have authored the excellent book, "Flower Essence Repertory," which describes how flowers are selected for essences and their properties verified (in some cases clinically), how they are used in healing, and a cross-referenced repertory of emotional and soul categories and themes, with the properties of each of the Bach remedies and California flower essences described under "positive qualities," "patterns of imbalances," and a detailed psychological and soul expressions section characteristic of each essence.

The first part of the collecting system that drains the urine from the nephrons.

cAMP
cyclic AMP (adenosine monophosphate)

The cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP are second messengers that carry signals from the cell surface to proteins within the cell, and are found widely in eukaryotes.

Cancer
A general term for more than 100 diseases that are characterized by uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells. Cancer cells can spread locally or through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body.

Reported by UPI Chicago (October 14, 98) : Autopsies show that doctors "overlooked or wrongly diagnosed cancer in nearly about half of their patients."

[Dr. Christopher]

For many years Dr. Christopher taught that cancer is not an isolated problem in the body. If the cancer breaks out in a place where we have an old injury or a weakened portion in the body it only indicates that the cancer is in the bloodstream. It only accumulates, like a boil or an ulcer, in a weakened area and drains the poisons in the area. The medical profession cuts it out and says, "Well, the cancer's all gone!" The cancer breaks out in another place. The bloodstream must be cleaned. The Red Clover combination or even Red Clover alone has a powerful alterative effect to clean the bloodstream.

Candida
Yeast infections are one of the most common reasons that women consult healthcare professionals. Yeast infections result from an overgrowth of a species of fungus called Candida albicans. The hallmark symptom of vaginitis caused by a yeast infection is itching of the external and internal genitalia, which is often associated with a white discharge that can be thick, curdy, or like cottage cheese. Severe infections lead to inflammation of the tissue and subsequent redness, swelling, and even pinpoint bleeding.

[Dr. Stoll] Typically Candida Albicans. Walt believes the best way to determine if you have Candida is to take the Candida Questionnaire which is available in many books. One version of this questionnaire is available on-line at this location. We ALL are continuously passing the yeast form of candida through our guts because it is everywhere in our environment. It is only a problem when it "sprouts" into the fungal form which is NEVER normal. Candida cannot "sprout" in our guts unless we already have LGS and the resultant Dysbiosis.

Candida-Related Syndrome
Candida-Related Syndrome. Candida Albicans: A dimorphic fungus that is an opportunistic pathogen of humans. A common aetiological agent for candidiasis and thrush. This species is found as a part of the normal gastrointestinal flora. See Leaky Gut Syndrome. Candidiasis is more of a function of immunity than anything else. That is why sugar is so devastating in the fight against Candida and why small amounts of fruit are not.

Canker Sores
Mouth ulcers, or canker sores, are small ulcerations within the mouth. Doctors call this common condition aphthous stomatitis.

Lifestyle changes that may be helpful: Minor trauma from poor-fitting dentures, rough fillings, or braces can aggravate mouth ulcers and should be remedied by a dentist.

Several reports have incriminated sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a component of some toothpastes, as a potential cause of canker sores.1 In one trial, most recurrent canker sores were eliminated just by avoiding SLS-containing toothpaste for three months.2 Positive effects of eliminating SLS have been confirmed in double blind research.3 SLS is thought to increase the risk of canker sores by removing a protective coating (mucin) in the mouth. People with recurrent canker sores should use an SLS-free toothpaste for several months to see if such a change helps.

Canola Oil
It's amazing to me...The more research I do, the more I see a relationship between the food we eat and fatal diseases. Canola oil is no exception. Now comes information that Canola Oil is the suspected causative agent for Scrapie, a viral disease transmitted to cattle who were fed rendered sheep infected with Scrapie. Both Scrapie and Mad Cow Disease destroy the brain's ability to function. They literally eat the brain away, causing blindness, loss of mind and erratic behaviour.

Canola oil's real name is "LEAR" oil (Low Erucic Acid Rape). it is more commonly known as "rape oil," a semi-drying oil that is used as a lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base, and as an illuminant to give color pages in magazines their slick look. In short it is an industrial oil that does not belong in the human body. It is typically referred to in light industry as a penetrating oil. Back in the 1980's, rape oil was widely used in animal feeds in England and throughout Europe. It was banned in 1991. Since then, Scrapie in sheep has totally disappeared. While that's good for Europeans, it is bad for Americans because the problem is now ours.

Rape seed oil (Canola oil) is widely used in thousands of processed foods...with the blessings of our own government. Canola oil was first developed in Canada. It's proponents claim that due to genetic engineering and irradiation, it is no longer rape oil, but "canola" (Canadian oil). They also claim it is completely safe, pointing to it's unsaturated structure and digestibility. Although, I could not verify it, it is claimed the Canadian government paid the FDA the sum of $50 million dollars to have canola oil placed on the GRAS list (Generally Recognized As Safe). However it was done, a new industry was created.

The truth is, however, that rape is the most toxic of all food oil plants. Not even insects will eat it. No wonder farmers like growing it. It turns out that rape is a member of the mustard family of plants, and is the source for the chemical agent, mustard gas, which causes blistering on skin and lungs when inhaled. Mustard Gas was banned after WWI for this very reason.

Studies of canola oil done on rats indicate many problems. Rats developed fatty degeneration of heart, kidney, adrenals and thyroid gland. When the canola oil was withdrawn from their diet, the deposits dissolved, but scar tissue remained on the organs. Why were no studies done on humans before the FDA placed it on the GRAS list? Consumed in food, Canola oil depresses the immune system, causing it to "go to sleep."

Canola oil is high in glycosides which cause health problems by blocking (inhibiting) enzyme function. It's effects are accumulative, taking years to show up. One possible effect of long term use is the destruction of the protective coating surrounding nerves called the mylin sheath. When this protective sheath is gone, our nerves short-circuit causing erratic, uncontrollable movements.

To test the industrial penetrating strength of canola oil, soak a towel in both canola oil and regular vegetable oil. Pre-treat and wash the towel in your clothes washer and compare the area the two oils occupied...you will notice an oil stain remains on the area soaked in canola oil. It is so durable, it could take several washings to completely remove. Now if this is how canola oil penetrates the fabric of a towel, what damage can it do in our body?

Because canola oil is so cheap, it is now widely used in the food industry. If you are curious, just read a few food labels the next time you are in the grocery store. A good example can be found with commercially prepared peanut butter. In order to give peanut butter it's spreadability, Jiffy, Peter Pan and Skippy brands remove ALL of the natural peanut oil and replace it with canola oil. Natural peanut butter should only have peanuts and salt listed in the ingredients. If you want to use natural peanut butter, it's available in most stores next to the canola peanut butter. Stir the contents to mix the oil and peanuts together then store in the refrigerator. The cold temperature will prevent the peanut oil from separating. Best of all, you will have eliminated at least one source of a potential food hazard. Food consumers have headaches enough, without worrying about a toxic plant oil being added to their food. The problem is you will find canola oil in bread, margarines, and all manner of processed foods. But the consumer is king. Be informed and make it a practice to read what goes into your food. Avoid using canola as a cooking oil and salad oil. It is not a healthy oil.

Capillary
  • 1. pertaining to or resembling a hair.
  • 2. any of the minute vessels that connect the arterioles and venules, forming a network in nearly all parts of the body. Their walls act as semipermeable membranes for the interchange of various substances, including fluids, between the blood and tissue fluid.

Capillary Fragility
When the smallest blood vessels, capillaries, become weak, a person is said to have capillary fragility. This leads to small spots of bleeding in the skin and easy bruising. There are no serious complications from having capillary fragility, but it may signify that a more serious, underlying problem exists. Therefore, individuals should consult a physician if there is bleeding in the skin.

Capsicum
Capsicum has been used for decades as a catalyst for other herbs. Because Capsicum stimulants circulation and enhances blood flow, it is considered food for the circulatory system, a common condiment to the diet.

As a cardiovascular stimulant, Capsicum assists in lowering blood pressure and breaking down cholesterol buildup. The warming properties of Capsicum are useful for people suffering from poor circulation to the hands and feet and other related conditions.

Capsicum has been used as a digestive aid to ease intestinal inflammation, stimulate protective mucus membranes of the stomach, and also relieve pain caused by ulcers.

Capsicum is commonly used to buffer pain from other ailments, including arthritis, varicose veins, headaches, menstrual cramps and respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Carbohydrate
Sugars are classified by chemists as "carbohydrates". This manufactured word means "a substance containing carbon with oxygen and hydrogen". If chemists want to use these hermetic terms in their laboratories when they talk to one another, fine. The use of the word "carbohydrate" outside the laboratory-especially in food labeling and advertising lingo-to describe both natural, complete cereal grains (which have been a principal food of mankind for thousands of years) and man-refined sugar (which is a manufactured drug and principal poison of mankind for only a few hundred years) is demonstrably wicked. This kind of confusion makes possible the flimflam practiced by sugar pushers to confound anxious mothers into thinking kiddies need sugar to survive.

Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular Disease is an umbrella term for diseases of the heart and arteries. CVD includes Abnormal Blood Clotting, Angina, Atherosclerosis, Congestive Heart Failure, Emboli, Heart Attack, Heart Enlargement, High Cholesterol, High Homocysteine, High Triglycerides, Hypertension, Ischemic Heart Disease, Peripheral Arterial Disease, Stroke, and other conditions.

Many risk factors are associated with cardiovascular disease; most can be managed, but some cannot. The aging process and hereditary predisposition are risk factors that cannot be altered. Until age fifty, men are at greater risk than women of developing heart disease, though once a woman enters menopause, her risk triples.

Many people with cardiovascular disease have elevated cholesterol levels.2 Low HDL cholesterol (known as the “good” cholesterol) and high LDL cholesterol (known as the “bad” cholesterol) are more specifically linked to cardiovascular disease than is total cholesterol.3 A blood test, administered by most healthcare professionals, is used to determine cholesterol levels.

Nutrients that are often considered “heart protectors” are antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10, and vitamins E and C. Folic acid and B vitamins have also been found to guard against cardiovascular dysfunction, as well as minerals such as magnesium and potassium. In addition, adequate intake of fatty acids, dietary fiber, and garlic can help lower blood levels of cholesterol and dangerous triglycerides. There are even age-old herbal remedies, such as hawthorn berries, which are known to ward off cardiovascular problems.

Carotid Artery
The big artery that supplies blood to the brain.

[Dr. Schulze]

Most Americans have blocked coronary arteries, but we don't ever talk about the other arteries in the body that are also blocked. A big one is the carotid artery that feeds the brain and then, all the little arteries that branch off of that and feed individual areas of the brain.

One of the first things we have to think about is, "How do we get more blood to the brain?" We need to thin the blood out. And, of course, as you know, the average cholesterol level in America is 200. We've had cases up to1600.

The best way to do that, and we've talked about this before, is our Vegan Food Program (which reduces the cholesterol level immediately) and juice fasting.

As part of that blood thinning program, people should remember their liver flushes because, of course, the liver flush is a clean-up of the liver, a flushing out of the fat in the liver, which allows the liver to do a better job at reducing the blood fat.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
A condition where there is a disturbance of median nerve function in the wrist as the nerve passes through the carpal tunnel.

In many cases, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is thought to result from long-term repetitive motions of the hands and wrists, such as from computer use. Although repetitive motion is often a culprit, it does not explain the frequent occurrence of CTS with non-motion-related conditions, such as pregnancy. Conventional treatment includes splinting, rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, or surgery.

A buildup of scar tissue (inside the carpal tunnel) can lead to this surgically correctable problem. Often treated with splinting and anti-inflammatory agents.

Greg Anliker has a website about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome here.

Cascara Sagrada Bark
Dried and cured, is one of the most effective, gentle and non-habituating laxatives available. Its effectiveness is mainly due to its high anthraquinone content. Anthraquinones, or A-factors, produce a soft or formed stool in about 6-8 hours with little or no griping. Additionally, this herb does not lose its efficiency with repeated use. In fact, Cascara can be used to correct the habitual constipation incurred by the abuse of other laxatives. Many over-the-counter laxatives contain Cascara, but you must be careful which one you pick because some contain substances of questionable value, such as belladonna alkaloids, podophyllum, aloin and strychnine. Cascara's beneficial properties include: (a) the cathartic action is mild, (b) it is unaccompanied by discomfort, griping or colic, (c) its action is limited to the large bowel, (d) its efficiency is not lost with repeated use, (e) it is not habit forming, and (f) it can correct habitual constipation by restoring normal intestinal tone.

Cat's Claw
Is a wood vine that grows in Peru, and has been used by the Peruvian Indians for years for the treatment of a wide range of health problems. Cat's Claw helps create support for the intestinal and immune systems of the body, and also creates intestinal support by its ability to cleanse the entire intestinal tract. This cleansing property helps create support for people experiencing different stomach & bowel disorders, including colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and leaky bowel syndrome. Cat's Claw contains seven different alkaloids that are credited with having a variety of different medicinal and healing properties. The most immunilogically active alkaloid is believed to be Isopteropodin (Isomer A), which increases the immune response in the body. In addition, the presence of glycosides, proanthocyanidins and beta sitosterol help provide anti-viral, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory support for the body.

Hank Oswald, M.D., who operates a clinic in Amsterdam, has cured sixty cases of Crohn's disease (chronic ileitis or inflammatory breakdown of the wall of the ileum or last part of the small intestine, a serious disorder) with Cat's Claw. Here our interest in Cat's Claw is that it has an alkaloid called isopteropodine that stimulates phagocytosis (the ability of white blood cells to engulf and digest harmful micro-organisms, such as viruses, tumor cells, etc.).

Cataracts
Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye thickens and becomes cloudy – making it difficult to focus and properly admit light into the eye.

Aging and nutritional deficiencies are the leading causes of these diseases, resulting in free radical damage and collagen metabolism errors within the eye.

Most people who live long enough will develop cataracts. Cataracts are more likely to occur in those who smoke, have diabetes, or are exposed to excessive sunlight. All of these factors lead to oxidative damage. Oxidative damage to the lens of the eye appears to cause cataracts in animals and people.

Catnip
Often called Catmint, acts in much the same manner as Peppermint. It is a soothing carminative to the gastrointestinal tract, a mild tonic, and a favorite tea for young children. North American Indians used the tea for childhood colic, while Europeans used it for similar complaints as well as colds and bronchial infections. Used before meals, it stimulates appetite; after meals, it stimulates digestion. Catnip is sometimes called “Nature's Alka Seltzer”, though that term aptly describes the whole Mint family of herbs.

Catuaba
Is undoubtedly the most famous of all Brazilian aphrodisiac plants, and has been appreciated by the local populations for generations. This valued herb from the Brazilian rainforest is praised by the Tupi Indians of Brazil as being an excellent nervous system fortifier and male libido enhancer. It is also used to treat male impotency. It is a strong tonic and fortifier of the nervous system, capable of giving strength to people with general fatigue. It helps eliminate restless sleep and insomnia from hypertension, and has been known to help failing memories.

Cayenne
(Capsicum annum) Is primarily a kind of catalyst in the blood purification process. Cayenne has positive effects on circulation, the heart, the stomach, and all other systems of the body. But it is not usually thought of as a tonic. It is generally considered a carminative (expelling gas from the stomach & intestines) and a stimulant. The stimulant property, however, is so prevalent that increased tonus of nerves & glands is a major end result of its action. It stimulates the vital organs to greater activity levels, and promotes cardiovascular efficiency, while lowering overall blood pressure. Additionally, Cayenne acts directly as a diaphoretic, stimulating excretion of wastes in the sweat. By increasing the circulation of blood to peripheral tissues, Cayenne helps ensure that nutrients (including those obtained from this and other herbal preparations) are effectively delivered to inflamed and infected areas. Cayenne also helps regulate cholesterol and lipid levels. In the carefully measured amounts, Cayenne will slowly eat away cholesterol deposits and provide relief from concurrent hypertension.

Nature's finest stimulant; source of calcium and vitamin A. Aids in circulation of blood which brings oxygen and other nutriments to cells in need of repair.

Cayenne pepper has always been taken to cut through mucus in most of the respiratory diseases. It is our finest stimulant and can be used alone or with other herbs.

[Dr. Christopher]

He began working with cayenne, which is high in calcium and vitamin C. He found that cayenne is one of the best remedies for the heart. He saw that it restores and retains the elasticity of the blood vessels, correcting or preventing hardening of the arteries and preserving the health of the circulatory system. Ray also found that cayenne equalized blood circulation and brought blood pressure to normal. He even found that cayenne was powerful enough to stop a heart attack in progress. In later years, carrying cayenne in his herbal doctor's bag, he never lost a person to a heart attack. He remembered one woman who had suffered from heart problems for eighteen years. She had taken powerful heart medication for more than seven years. After starting cayenne, she was able to stop this medication within months. Her varicose veins also completely cleared.

Cedar Berries
[Dr. Christopher]

One day a man visited him with a kidney problem; he couldn't void his urine. Dr. Christopher told him to use juniper berries to quickly clear up the case. The man was happy about that--he had juniper berries in his own back yard, and so he went home to gather some for his kidney problem. A few weeks later, the man came back and said, "Your juniper berries didn't do anything for me; they didn't help at all!" Dr. Christopher said that it was impossible, that juniper berries always work to clear up kidney problems. "Well, I've got some in my pocket; here they are.""That's not a true juniper berry," said Dr. Christopher. "That's a monostone Cedar berry, from a Cedar tree, such as we commonly have in this area. The juniper berry has three stones and even seven stones, but the Cedar berry is a mono-stone; it's a cherry-stone type. Let me get you some juniper berries." He brought the man some, and showed him that it was a true juniper berry; the Cedar berry is in the same family, but it's just a "kissing cousin.""Fine," said the man, "I'll go home and take some, but I'm going to keep using the Cedar berries, too.""Why bother, if they aren't going to do you any good?" asked Dr. Christopher."It's an amazing thing," said the man, "but since I've been using them, I don't have to take as much insulin."Dr. Christopher asked further into the effects of the berries. He asked the man to take six berries three times a day and to report his results. After a few months, the man didn't have to use any insulin at all. From being a typical diabetic, dependent on insulin to monitor his blood sugar, he had to use no insulin at all.

Celiac Disease
Celiac disease (also called gluten-induced enteropathy) is associated with a specific intolerance to a certain protein (gluten) found in wheat, oats, barley, and rye. Common symptoms include Abdominal Bloating, Cramping, Diarrhea, Muscle Wasting, Fatigue, Anemia and other nutrient deficiencies and in some cases Arthritis. Despite intensive study, the mechanisms involved in celiac disease have not been determined. At first it was hypothesized that individuals suffering from Celiac disease simply lacked a digestive enzyme needed to break down Gluten. We now know that the mechanisms are far more complex. A new theory suggests that Lectins are responsible for at least some of the intestinal damage. Lectins are molecules found in some foods that can have a variety of toxic effects on living tissues. Current research suggests that wheat germ Lectin may be the culprit responsible for scarring of tissues along the intestinal tract.

Until recently celiac disease was thought to only effect 1 out of 300 people in the general population. Today’s research shows that there are more undiagnosed than diagnosed cases. The problem is that many of these undiagnosed cases are latent, and do not show the prominent symptoms of more severe disease. Celiac Disease exhibits a significantly higher prevalence among patients with autoimmune disease, Diabetes, mental/neurological disorders, intestinal cancers and Lymphoma. It is becoming obvious that celiac disease is only the tip of the iceberg, representing a very small part of a much larger group of individuals with grain allergy.

Microscopic examination of the small-intestinal lining reveals severe damage, especially in the jejunum. Individuals with untreated celiac disease may eventually experience malaise and weight loss and have an increased risk of developing Anemia, Osteoporosis, Osteomalacia, and certain types of cancer. Neurological disorders and emotional problems may also complicate celiac disease in some cases.

Cell
The human body is made of cells; all cells contain a center, called a nucleus, in which genetic material is stored. This genetic material, known as genes, carries the codes responsible for all our inherited characteristics.

  • 1. any one of the minute protoplasmic masses that make up organized tissue, consisting of a nucleus which is surrounded by cytoplasm which contains the various organelles and is enclosed in the cell or plasma membrane. A cell is the fundamental, structural, and functional unit of living organisms.
  • 2. a small, more or less closed space.

Cell membrane
A double layer of fatty material (phospholipids) and proteins that surrounds each living cell of all organisms.

Cell Salts
Cell salts are ionic mineral compounds that that are essential for health. It is felt by many homeopaths that all conditions of ill health are caused by physiological imbalances of these important minerals. Cell salts make up part of the repertoire of homeopathic remedies.

Cell salts are often used in conjunction with other homeopathic remedies. While most of the 12 cell salts may be obtained from inorganic sources, the best quality salts are derived from plants.

The twelve cell salts are:

  • CALCAREA FLUOR (calcium fluoride): Important for proper vascular health. Often used to treat conditions such as varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and hardening of the arteries.
  • CALCAREA PHOS (calcium phosphate): Found virtually everywhere in the body. It is essential in blood cell and bone formation. Used to treat digestion problems and general anemia.
  • CALCAREA SULPH (calcium sulfate): present in bile. Acts as a blood-cleansing agent. Used in the treatment of respiratory disorders, skin problems, and general healing.
  • FERRUM PHOS (iron phosphate): Found in the hemoglobin of red blood cells. Used to treat colds and flu as well as all inflammatory conditions.
  • KALI MUR (potassium chloride): Found throughout the body. Used in the treatment of skin disorders, glandular problems, and excessive mucous.
  • KALI PHOS (potassium phosphate): Found in virtually all the tissues. Used to treat body odor and various mental problems.
  • KALI SULPH (potassium sulfate): Acts as an oxygen carrier. Used to treat eye, ear, nose, and throat discharge.
  • MAGNESIA PHOS (magnesium phosphate): Found in muscle and nerves. Used in the treatment of cramps and neuralgia.
  • NATRUM MUR (sodium chloride): Found throughout the body. Important for osmotic balance in cells. Used to treat chills, bloating, and secretions from the skin and eyes.
  • NATRUM PHOS (sodium phosphate): Important for pH balance. Often used to treat bowel disorders.
  • NATRUM SULPH (sodium sulfate): Used in the treatment of pancreatic problems, dry skin, and gout.
  • SILICEA (silica): Found in bones and connective tissue. Used in blood cleansing and general body healing.

Cell Therapy
The use of glandulars is based upon Dr. Paul Niehan's discovery of the ability of injected glandular tissue to stimulate or replace the function of the corresponding gland in the injected individual. Thousands, if not millions, of people have gone to Europe for cell therapy over the past 30-40 years.

Cesium
  • Year discovered: 1861
  • Atomic No.: 55
  • Symbol: Cs
  • Atomic weight: 132.905
  • Melting point: 28.5º C

Most often found with tantalum, beryllium or lithium, cesium takes the form of a soft and malleable, silver-white alkali metal. Discovered in 1860 in mineral water from Durkheim, Germany, it was the first element to be detected spectroscopically. The metal had no significant use until the 1920s, when it was used as a coating for tungsten filaments in lighting. Cesium, usually in the form of chemical compounds, is used in research and development and commercially in electronic, photoelectric and medical applications.

Cetyl-myristoleate
commonly called CMO, is a medium-chained fatty acid (oil) discovered when it was observed that a certain strain of white mice were totally arthritis resistant. Cetyl-myristoleate is a waxy substance at room temperature, but a clear, light yellow oily material at body temperature. It can be laid upon an absorbent bed of powder, and the end product compressed into a tablet, or it can be encapsulated into a two-piece hardshell capsule, or a gelatin softshell capsule. CMO is a simple, natural nutrient….not a drug. And CMO doesn’t cause any known side effects. Numerous, well-documented scientific studies have shown repeatedly the high efficacy of CMO is effectively treating patients afflicted with mild-to-severe cases of various forms of arthritis. The results of these studies showed consistent, permanent relief from pain, inflammation, and marked deformation of nearly all interphalangeal & large joints.

Chamomile
Is one of the best-known “cure-alls”. It is a bitter tonic with many proven properties, including antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and very good sedative properties. Other proven actions of this herb include anti-ulcer, antibacterial, and antimycotic effects. The traditional roles of a bitter, including a stimulating effect on the liver, have also been firmly established. Chamomile has other important functions, the most important of which are anti-tumor, or anti-cancer, properties. Cultures as divergent as Western Europe, Russia, India have all used Chamomile for very similar tonic purposes down through the centuries.

Changease
One of Dr. Christopher's formulas

Herbal hormone combination: Black Cohosh, Sarsparilla, Ginseng, Licorice, False Unicorn, Holy Thistle and Squaw Vine.

Produce Milk: Dr. Christopher reminded us that it requires a certain balance of hormones--estrogens and progesterones--to produce milk. If a woman doesn't seem to be making enough milk, she should balance up her hormones by taking a few capsules of this formula.

Rebuilding Weak and Malfunctioning Areas: These are natural herbal foods that are needed by both men and women at all ages. Being "natural" herbs, the human body can accept, assimilate and use those materials that are needed to produce estrogens and other hormones naturally. This formula will assist in rebuilding the weak malfunctioning areas and help keep the organs healthy so they can supply the proper amounts of hormones and estrogens themselves. Herbs are a natural food, so they do not have "side effects" and "after effects" as are so evident in man-made and synthetic drugs.

Youth, Expecting Mothers and Those in Menopause: This combination, called Changease, helps youths going into puberty, expecting mothers whose hormones sometimes cause problems (one husband says that when his wife is pregnant her "hormones are raging"), women going through the change of life and men, too.

Chaparral
(Larrea tridentata) Is undoubtedly beneficial for some people with certain types of cancer in certain stages of development, but it is not clear who may benefit, which cancers are most susceptible, or at which stage of cancer development the herb is most effective. It has been repeatedly shown that NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid), the active principle in Chaparral, is poisonous to some kinds of cancer cells while not affecting normal cells. The herb's effectiveness against other forms of skin diseases may be attributed to its anti-microbial properties, its ability to increase ascorbic acid levels in the adrenals, or its tonic quality.

Charcoal
Charcoal (Activated) is a finely ground encapsulated powder that is made from wood that has been exposed to very high temperatures in the absence of air. Charcoal itself has been used over decades for its known effectiveness in absorbing and expelling intestinal gas. Charcoal is classified as an "adsorbent" substance, and for this reason, it's the popular choice among hospitals today for the treatment of drug over doses and poisonings.

Charcoal (Activated) may also be used for relieving a variety of ailments, such as indigestion, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, high cholesterol, intestinal gas and bloating. Charcoal's ability to adsorb and prevent substances from dislodging or reabsorbing into the body makes it a popular choice for detoxifying the liver and kidneys.

Applied topically, Charcoal also may help draw out poisons and toxins from wounds, skin irritations, as well as insect bites and stings.

Chickweed
(Stellaria media) Chickweed, also known as starweed, is an herb especially useful for supporting healthy urinary system function. Containing anti-inflammatory properties, chickweed is popularly used to promote healing and soothe irritated tissues. Chickweed provides antibiotic agents that are beneficial for relieving urinary tract inflammation and cystitis.

Chickweed contains vitamin A, vitamin C, some B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Chickweed provides the body with nutrients that are necessary for balancing metabolic functions, and it also contains fiber, which helps improve digestion and relieve constipation.

Chickweed is also beneficial for reducing mucus build-up and may be used to treat a variety of respiratory problems, including bronchitis, chronic coughing and colds. In addition, chickweed may be used to soothe sore throat, and alleviate flu symptoms.

When used externally, chickweed is known to be effective in the treatment of bruises, skin irritations, eczema, and other skin problems.

(Women who are pregnant should avoid chickweed, and excess intake may cause vomiting and diarrhea.)

Chickweed is the little "pest" that grows many gardens. This herb is wonderful for pulmonary complaints. It has the ability to remove fluids from the lungs.

Chiropractic
Apparently, spinal adjustment has been used in every civilization at least from the early Egyptians on. Chiropractic (the word is derived from the Latin for "done by hand") in its modern-day form was seemingly discovered and developed by Daniel David Palmer of Davenport, Iowa, in 1985. The idea is that human beings are self healing organisms, that our creator did not put us here helpless before disease.

chiropractic concerns itself with the relationships of the spinal column and other musculoskeletal structures of the body, including pelvic, hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and finger and toe joints, cranial bones, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), to the nervous system. There are 24 spinal vertebrae (normally 7 cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 dorsal or thoracic vertebrae in the upper and mid back, and 5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back) in addition to the partly fused bones of the sacrum and coccyx. Between each pair of vertebrae pairs of spinal nerves exit and reach to every part of the body, muscles, bones, organs, and glands, such that interference from nerve energy flow arising from misalignment of spinal vertebrae (called "subluxations" by DCs) can impact on all these parts of the body. This is why chiropractic can successfully address many body dysfunctions other than purely mechanical musculoskeletal ones.

Chiropractic attracted so many followers that the American Medical Association (AMA) turned its considerable political clout to have chiropractors jailed for practicing medicine without a license, and chiropractic began to fall into public disfavor.

Due to the illegal boycott of the Chiropractic profession by the American Medical Association, and many other medical associations, the chiropractic profession is being forced into the subspecialty of treating back pain. It should be now obvious to you why we are so knowledgeable in regards to the spine and why our methods have such great success in these cases but back pain is NOT what Chiropractic is about. In their search for acceptance by the medical profession many chiropractors have given up the philosophy of Chiropractic, even the idea of an innate intelligence, so that they can pursue a practice based solely on resolving musculoskeletal conditions. In fact, there are some Chiropractic colleges that fail to adequately teach the philosophy of Chiropractic in the hopes that "sticking to back pain" will create an acceptance by the medical community and thus will result in a higher status in the healing arts---exactly what the AMA would like to see!

Unfortunately, the osteopathic profession did this only to find the holistic approach to health care approach beat down to near non-existence in their profession. The opposition to the holistic approach is so great that it boggles the mind. The AMA continues to be the largest lobbying force on Capital Hill. ANY other healing philosophy, other than allopathy, is considered competition to the conventional medical monopoly and SO any attempt at compromise by any competing philosophy is seen as weakness and appeasement by the AMA.

Chiropractic recognizes that in every person there is an "innate intelligence" that maintains the body in an active organization. The difference between those who get sick and those who stay healthy is based on the susceptibility of the organism as much as it is on what is attacking the body. Therefore chiropractors try to be experts in health rather than experts in disease.

The expression of this "innate intelligence" is from the mind of the person, down through the nervous system, and out to the rest of the body. Chiropractors try to make sure that there is no interference in this transmission through the spinal column. With the body optimally prepared for the daily struggle against invading organisms the likelihood of illness is significantly decreased. With an awareness that there are many factors which contribute to the strength of the person, such as environmental, genetic, nutritional, lifestyle, emotional, etc.., chiropractors try to hone in on that part of us which is the ultimate controller and dictator of function: the innate intelligence.

We have found that when the spine is free of misalignments and dysfunction, what we call vertebral subluxations, the body works much better. Having applied this to countless patients over the last 100 years we, as well as many others such as Irvin M. Korr, find that the removal of these subluxations has improved the health of people so much that their innate intelligence is returned to the point that it can bring people back from seemingly insurmountable odds.

For example, the first patient of Palmer's was a janitor in the building where he worked. The man, named Harvey Lillard, had been deaf for 17 years, ever since he heard something in his upper back "give way".

Palmer reasoned that if he could adjust this spot back to its intended position that he might have some effect on the man's hearing. Palmer talked the man into allowing him to give it a try. Soon the man could hear. Realizing that he was onto something Palmer developed the science, art, and philosophy of Chiropractic.

The practice of Chiropractic is NOT a treatment for any condition or disease. To be a treatment, something must stimulate or depress functioning in the body. What we do is to try and restore the maximum potential of the body by freeing the nervous system of any interference. The result is a body that is more approximate to perfection in its organic potential. While the success rate in the resolution of things such as asthma, indigestion, chronic infection, constipation, anxiety, backaches, etc.., is remarkably high with Chiropractic care, it is NOT the goal of Chiropractic to treat these conditions. It is the goal of Chiropractic to optimize the body's innate ability to heal itself. The innate is limitless but the matter is limited and thus some people cannot return from the diseased state.

Consequently, it is the hope of Chiropractic that every man, woman, and child be checked for these vertebral subluxations to ensure that the genetic potential may be fully realized.

100 years ago we went to the dentist for a toothache, and today we go BEFORE the tooth hurts to have the flaws identified and corrected. This is the simple aspiration of Chiropractic. Everything we say or do has a positive or negative effect on the body.

Dr. Stoll is trying to convey this message and give people the answers to health rather than just answers to their diseases. Everything we eat, do and think has far reaching effects. Each of these things can go so far as to actually induce spinal subluxations. D.D. Palmer called these things "thoughts, traumas, and toxins" a century ago.

Dr. Stoll talks of total body bracing. As Chiropractors we see this bracing as part of a cycle that includes subluxations of vertebrae. It is a vicious cycle because one can cause the other. We know through electromylographic and thermographic readings that we can eliminate total body bracing with specific spinal adjustments. We also know that muscle tension can result in subluxations. This is why there is such a great importance in proper nutrition, stress management/skilled relaxation, posture, etc.

Chiropractors feel that the most important part is the removal of the subluxations but are also aware that these have their causes and that those causes, "thoughts, traumas, and toxins" can and should be minimized.

After years and years of trying to find an antidote to every disease, the allopathic medical profession has created a situation where they are directly responsible for the deaths of 300,000+ people a year because of reactions to prescription medications, complications to surgery, nosocomial infections, and medical error. While they are masters of emergency care they are utter failures at "health" care and helping chronic illnesses. Our country consumes over half of the prescription medication in the world, spends more money per person than any other country, and still remains low on the list of health in developed nations. Why? Because allopathic medicine is a disease care system and not a health care system.

We cannot spend all our time trying to change our environment. Viruses and bacteria will ALWAYS be out there. We have to concentrate on improving the health of people prior to illnesses. As Hippocrates said, "Disease is not an entity, but a fluctuating condition of the patients body; a battle between the substance of disease and the natural self-healing tendency of the body".

Health and disease are opposite ends of a spectrum in which we all fluctuate. The goal is to approximate the healthy end.

Vertebral subluxations cause us to lose full access to our innate abilities by creating interference in our nervous system. Identification and removal of these subluxations is the job of the chiropractor.

Chiropractors fall into two broad groups, the "straights," who deal only with locating and removing subluxations, and the "mixers," who add other modalities, such as the use of ultrasound, galvanic stimulation, shortwave and microwave radiation, etc. Some also use nutrition. Some are trained in Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA) and a small minority in the special techniques of Michael Lebowitz, DC. Adjustments may be done with thrusts of the hands, or by “non-force” techniques such as gentle touch and/or stretch along the spine, pelvis or skull; sometimes a hand-held spring- loaded device called an activator is used to move bones gently. There are a few rare DCs I've encountered who adjust via psychokinesis. Some DCs use applied kinesiology, not only to discover what needs help and in what direction to move a bone or displaced organ, etc., but also to remove the dysfunction by special techniques such as correcting gait reflexes, centering circuits, origin- insertion muscle manipulation, etc., forms of which, by the way, are part of the Touch for Health system.

Chlorophyll
The chlorophyll molecule is made up of a web of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms around one single atom of magnesium. It is interesting to compare this design with that of the hemoglobin of our red blood corpuscles, which has a similar web of elements girdling an atom of iron instead of the atom of magnesium.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants that harnesses the sun's energy in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is to plants what blood is to humans—it performs metabolic functions such as respiration, and growth. Interestingly, the chlorophyll molecule is chemically similar to human blood, except that its central atom is magnesium, whereas that of human blood is iron.

Chlorophyll has been used to repair tissues and is often used to help neutralize the pollution that we eat and breathe. It assists in the assimilation of calcium and other minerals. It works to strengthen and purify the entire body.

chlorpheniramine and phenylpropanolamine
What is chlorpheniramine and phenylpropanolamine?
  • Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in your body. Chlorpheniramine prevents sneezing; itchy, watery eyes and nose; and other symptoms of allergies and hay fever.
  • Phenylpropanolamine is a decongestant. It constricts (shrinks) blood vessels (veins and arteries). This reduces the blood flow to certain areas, which decreases swelling and allows nasal and respiratory (breathing) passages to open up.
  • Chlorpheniramine and phenylpropanolamine is used to treat nasal congestion and sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) associated with allergies, hay fever, and the common cold.

Chondroitin Sulfates
Act like "water magnets" within joint cartilage (whereas glucosamine helps to form the proteoglycans that sit within the spaces in the cartilage ‘netting’ to act like "water holders"). A long chain of repeating sugars, chondroitin helps attract fluid into the proteoglycan molecules, which acts both as a spongy shock absorber for the bones, and also as a mechanism to sweep body nutrients into the cartilage for nourishment & lubrication. Additionally, chondroitin inhibits the destructive action of certain enzymes which naturally degenerate the cartilage, interferes with other natural enzymes which tend to impede the transport of nutrients to cartilage, stimulates the production of cartilage matrix molecules, and enhances synergistically the action of the glucosamines.

Chromatin
The more readily stainable portion of the cell nucleus, forming a network of nuclear fibrils. It is a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) attached to a protein (primarily histone) structure base and is the carrier of the genes in inheritance. It occurs in two states, euchromatin and heterochromatin, with different staining properties, and during cell division it coils and folds to form the metaphase chromosomes.

Chromium
  • Year discovered: 1797
  • Atomic No.: 24
  • Symbol: Cr
  • Atomic weight: 51.996
  • Melting point: 1,857º C

Chromium is used to produce stainless steel and to harden steel alloys. It is a steel-gray, lustrous, hard and brittle metallic element that takes its name from the Greek word for color -- chrome -- because of the brilliant colors of its compound. Chromium is found primarily in chromite, which is composed of iron, chromium and oxygen. In the Western Hemisphere chromite ore is only produced in Brazil and Cuba. Worldwide the three largest chromite ore producers -- accounting for about two-thirds of world production -- are India, Kazakhstan and South Africa. Chromium is used in corrosion-resistant decorative plating and is a pigment in glass.

An essential mineral found to help in sugar and fat metabolism and appetite control.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
An illness of unknown origin (now thought by some to be caused by allergies or food sensitivity) in which disabling fatigue and symptoms associated with this fatigue have been experienced for a period of at least six months and have resulted in a reduction of daily activities by at least 50 percent. Six or more of the following symptoms are required for diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome: mild fever, sore throat, painful lymph nodes, muscle weakness, myalgia, prolonged fatigue after exercise, headaches, migratory arthralgias, neuropsychologic complaints, or sleep disturbance.

Studies of patients with CFIDS have repeatedly shown dysfunction in both the nervous and immune systems. In the nervous system, neurotransmitter levels in the cerebrospinal fluid and blood plasma show elevated serotonin metabolites and decreased norepinephrine metabolites. But perhaps the most dramatic neurological changes involve the neurotransmitter system, including n-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, gamma amino benzoic acid (GABA) receptors, and the balance between the two. NMDA receptors are part of the brain's neuro-excitatory pathway. When activated, these receptors allow calcium and sodium ions to pass freely into the nerve cells. GABA receptors are part of the brain's neuro-inhibitory pathway. When activated, these receptors help hyperpolarize the nerve cell membranes by allowing chloride ions to enter the cell or potassium ions to exit. This hyperpolarization of the cell inhibits nerve activity. When nerve function is balanced, GABA and NMDA receptor activity is balanced. In CFIDS, however, NMDA receptors become substantially more active than GABA receptors, so stimuli like light and noise, which ordinarily would not cause an experience of pain, become able to do so.

Immunologic changes known to occur in CFIDS patients include altered natural killer cell activity, increased mitogen stimulation, increased T cell activation, and increased presence of the cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1), and to a lesser extent, interleukin-2 (IL-2). Production of the cytokine alpha-interferon (INF-alpha) has also been determined to be increased in CFIDS patients, and it may be directly involved in the nervous system imbalance involving NMDA and GABA receptors. The elevation of INF-alpha, IL-1, and IL-2 may also be important in their ability to increase NO synthesis. Each of these cytokines has been shown to be a potent inducer of one form of the nitric oxide synthase enzyme that converts the amino acid arginine into citrulline, and during the process creates NO. While this complex interaction of the immune and nervous systems in CFIDS has yet to be fully understood, a functional medicine approach that focuses on immunosupport and elimination of immunotoxins proves effective in CFIDS treatment.

Treatment with probiotics has been successful in some cases of CFS.

It is thought that parasitic infections contribute to some cases of CFS.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to the combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema resulting in obstruction of airways. Although chronic bronchitis and emphysema are distinct conditions, smokers and former smokers often have aspects of both. In chronic bronchitis, the linings of the bronchial tubes are inflamed and thickened, leading to a chronic, mucus-producing cough and shortness of breath. In emphysema, the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs) are damaged, also leading to shortness of breath. COPD is generally irreversible and can be fatal.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can occur after excessive clotting and inflammation of the leg veins, a disease known as deep vein thrombosis. CVI also results from a simple failure of the valves in leg veins to hold blood against gravity, leading to sluggish movement of blood out of the veins. It can cause feet and calves to become swollen, often accompanied by a dull ache made worse with prolonged standing. If CVI is allowed to progress, the skin tends to darken and ulcers can occur. CVI often causes varicose veins.

Clark, Dr. Hulda
It took an independent research scientist to find the answers. Hulda Regehr Clark began her studies in biology at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, where she was awarded the Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, and the Master of Arts, with High Honors. After two years of study at McGill University, she attended the University of Minnesota, studying biophysics and cell physiology. She received her Doctorate in Physiology in 1958. In 1979 she left government-funded research and began private consulting on a full-time basis. Eleven years later she noticed clues as to the cause of cancer; a year later clues as to the cause of HIV infection and AIDS. Today, Dr. Clark puts her latest conclusions, her advice for curing cancer, and all other disease including HIV/AIDS, her results and her methods before you.

Dr. Clark says, "These books are intended as a gift to humanity. I make a plea to the public and private sector of the medical community not to suppress this information but to disperse it regardless of embarrassment or liability from the simplicity and newness of the cure, provided only that it meets your standard of truth."

Co-enzyme A
Co-enzyme A plays a central role in the production of energy in your cells via a biochemical pathway called the Krebs' cycle. This involves the production of energy from fats & carbohydrates.

Co-enzyme B1
Allithiamine is a more bio-available form of Vitamin B1. Allithiamine is a fat soluble thiamine derivative as opposed to thiamine HCL which is water soluble only. In comparative absorption studies it was shown that allithiamine is absorbed & penetrates the cell membrane far better than thiamine HCL, the usual supplemental form. Water soluble forms of thiamine have limited absorption through the gut and alcohol & malabsorption markedly reduce intestinal absorption of thiamine HCL.

Co-enzyme B2
Riboflavin-5-Phosphate which is the active co-enzyme form of vitamin B2.

Psychiatric medicines such as tranquilizers & some anti-depressants can interfere with vitamin B2 metabolism, necessitating clear supplementation. This co-enzyme form of B2 is preferable in those cases as it guarantees better absorption & utilization & does not depend upon certain functions in the liver as does the other vitamin B2.

Co-enzyme B5
Pantetheine is the biologially active form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5.) It is the precursor to co-enzyme A (CoA.)

Co-enzyme A plays a central role in the production of energy in your cells via a biochemical pathway called the Krebs' cycle. This involves the production of energy from fats & carbohydrates. Pantothenic acid is also essential for adrenal gland function.

Cobalt
  • Year discovered: 1735
  • Atomic No.: 27
  • Symbol: Co
  • Atomic weight: 58.93
  • Melting point: 1,495º C

Cobalt is used mainly in high-temperature alloys, magnetic alloys and hard-facing alloys resistant to abrasion. U.S. resources for the sliver-gray metal are estimated to be about 1.3 million tons, most of which are in Minnesota. However, there are other occurrences in Alaska, California, Idaho, Missouri, Montana and Oregon Cobalt production from these deposits, with the exception of Idaho, are as a by-product of another metal. Cobalt has been in use since at least 2250 B.C., when the Persians used it to color glass. Swedish scientist G. Brant isolated metallic cobalt in 1735 and it was recognized as an element in 1780.

Coca
plant (genus Erythroxylon, particularly E. coca) found mainly in upland regions and on mountain slopes of South America and in Australia, India, and Africa. Certain South American peoples chew the leaves mixed with lime, which acts with saliva to release cocaine from the leaves. In this form and concentration, the drug acts as a stimulant. A cocaine-free extract of the leaves is used in some soft drinks. Coca is grown commercially in Sri Lanka, Java, and Taiwan.

cocaine
Alkaloid drug derived from coca leaves, producing euphoria, hallucinations, and temporary increases in physical energy. Prolonged use can cause nervous-system aberrations (including delusions), general physical deterioration, weight loss, and addiction. Withdrawal from the drug can produce severe depression.

Coccyx
The end of the spinal column beyond the sacrum in man and tailless apes.

codeine
Alkaloid drug derived from opium. A narcotic with effects like those of morphine, codeine is prescribed as an analgesic and cough suppressant. It is addictive.

Coenzyme
An organic nonprotein molecule, frequently a phosphorylated derivative of a water-soluble vitamin, that binds with the protein molecule (apoenzyme) to form the active enzyme (holoenzyme).

COLD

Cold
Every year, over one fifth of the U.S. Population will contract the flu, and on any given day, over 15% of the U.S. Population has a cold. Consequently, more people lose time from work and school because a cold or flu than any other illness combined.

A cold or flu is caused by a viral infection attacking the upper respiratory system and are assisted by weakened immune systems. Although there is no "cure" for a cold or flu, a well-supported immune system can help prevent the onset of, suppress the symptoms of and speed the recovery from these illnesses. Common symptoms can include sore throat, head congestion, coughing, headache, fever, sneezing, and body aches and pains.

The common cold is an acute (short-term) viral infection of the upper respiratory tract that often causes runny nose, sore throat, and malaise. Sore throat is sometimes a symptom of a more serious condition distinct from the common cold (such as strep throat) that may require medical diagnosis and treatment with appropriate antibiotics.

Cold Sores
Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus, most often the herpes simplex 1 virus. Cold sores should not be confused with canker sores, which are small ulcerations in the mouth. Rather, cold sores are fluid-filled blisters that form on the gums and the outside of the mouth and lips. The blisters, which are contagious, later break, ooze, and crust over before healing. Recurrences are common and can be triggered by stress, sun exposure, illness, and menstruation. If the infection is transmitted to the eyes, it can lead to blindness. Genital herpes infection (usually caused by herpes simplex 2) is a related condition and potentially can be treated in much the same way as herpes simplex 1.

Food sensitivities have been identified as one of the causes of cold sores.

cold-pressed
A meaningless advertising term used to imply quality in edible oils.

Colic
Colic is a common problem in infants. A colicky baby is healthy but has periods of inconsolable crying. During the crying spell, the infant may experience abdominal distention and excessive gas, drawing up his or her legs. Colic usually develops within a few weeks of birth and disappears by the baby’s fourth month.

Colitis
Inflamation of the colon.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease characterized by bloody diarrhea and an inflamed colon. UC is relatively common but remains poorly understood. Diagnosis must be made by a healthcare practitioner—typically a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel syndrome, a less serious condition, was sometimes called mucous colitis in the past. As a result, the general term “colitis” is still sometimes used inappropriately to refer to irritable bowel syndrome. It is critical that people who are diagnosed with “colitis” find out whether they have irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. Conventional treatment for UC is often essential in emergency circumstances. However, conventional treatments for UC frequently offer only a partial solution and in some cases are accompanied by significant side effects. Because of the limitations of conventional therapy, many people with UC look to natural medicine in an attempt to deal with their condition. All people with UC wishing to use natural approaches should work with a nutritionally oriented doctor.

Colitis is favored by underactive adrenals, a weak immune system, allergies, and insufficient stomach acid.

Parasitic infections are thought contribute to uclerative colitis.

Collagen
The most abundant protein in your body & necessary for maintaining the integrity of connective tissue, tendons, ligaments & cartilage.

Collecting System
Drains the urine from the nephron eventually forming the ureter which transports the urine to the bladder.

Colloidal Minerals
Colloidal minerals were introduced in recent years, and have been proven extremely beneficial. These minerals are the result of vegetation that has accumulated over several thousand years. They are then removed from the now clay like substance that was once vegetation. Colloidal minerals are microscopic at best in size. Ranging from .01 to .001 microns in diameter, they are easily dispensed in liquid. Absorption is made when the positively charged stomach lining comes into contact with the negatively ionized charge of the colloidal mineral. This same ionization magnetizes heavy metals, and other poisons, ridding them from the body.

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal Silver is an effective antimicrobial with powerful antibiotic properties that help destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses. Colloidal Silver also deactivates enzymes responsible for the multiplication and metabolism of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Colloidal Silver is a non-toxic formula whose effectiveness is comparable to herbs and herbal products such as golden seal and VS-C.

One teaspoon of Colloidal Silver provides 25 micrograms of pure silver. The ionized minute silver particles are suspended in pure deionized water to work quickly upon contact. Colloidal Silver can be taken orally or applied directly to the skin or effected areas.

Colloidal Silver is a disinfecting solution that reduces the length of bacterial infections, supports the immune system and prevents pathogens from developing resistant strains. Colloidal Silver may be used to treat burns, wounds, inflammation, eye and ear infections, sinus problems and tonsillitis.

Colloidal Silver remains in the body for three weeks before it is eliminated via the kidneys, bowel and lymphatic system. Colloidal Silver is beneficial for athlete's foot, candida yeast infections, acne, eczema, shingles, common colds and many other ailments.

(Colloidal Silver should be used temporarily rather than continuously.)

[Dr Stoll's take on Colloidal Silver]

Sixty years ago colloidal silver had been used for many years, but was falling into disrepute because of the long-term toxicity. The advent of antibiotics accelerated its "phasing out".

Silver is a "heavy metal". ALL heavy metals tend to accumulate in the body and ALL are toxic in trace amounts.

The problem is that CS is effective in the short term--just as antibiotics, cortisone, etc., are. It is the "whoops factor" that Walt is concerned about.

All of the papers about silver's toxicity, 50-60 years ago have been forgotten. Those who ignore history will be doomed to repeat it.

Colon
A common saying is that "death begins in the colon".

Some alternative practitioners believe that a disrupted ecology of the gastrointestinal tract may cause up to 90% of all known human illness and disease.

[Dr. Garner]

We turn now to the large intestine or colon. It is typically about 5 feet long, and is made up of the cecum, ascending colon, hepatic flexure, transverse colon, splenic flexure, descending colon, sigmoid, rectum, and anus, in that order. Unlike the small intestine, the large intestine has no villi, no secretion of digestive enzymes, and no true peristalsis. Mucus is secreted to help move the undigested food remains along and to bond them together into what becomes the feces. The large intestine has two main functions, absorption/dehydration, and temporary storage of fecal matter. About one-third to one quart of water, electrolytes, and some vitamins is absorbed daily and partly dehydrated. If the colon’s bacterial flora is normal (fairly rare these days with the great overuse of medical antibiotics and the presence of antibiotics in much of our food), the B vitamins, B1, B2, B12, and methionine are produced in the colon by the bacterial flora and transported to the rest of the body by the liver and portal circulation. Much of the absorption of nutrients from the chyme entering the large intestine occurs in the cecum and ascending colon. Mixing contractions (“haustrations”), mainly in the transverse and descending colon, occur especially after meals to help roll and mix the chyme to expose it to the colon’s surface for absorption (over 80% of material reaching the large intestine is reabsorbed). When the partly dehydrated fecal residue reaches the rectum a parasympathetic reflex activates to produce defecation unless we abort this mentally (not a good habit, especially if there is a tendency toward constipation). Typical feces are 75% water, 8% dead bacteria, 5% fat, 1% protein, and 5-10% fiber. Possible symptoms of large intestine dysfunction include constipation (very common; one should have at least one BM for each meal) and/or diarrhea, abnormal pain, tenderness, fever, weight loss or gain, weakness, headaches, allergies, bags under the eyes, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, burning sensations (especially of the feet), tendency toward gallstones and appendicitis, and weakness of the hamstrings, quadratus lumborum and/or tensor fascia lata muscles. A transit time over 36 hours suggests a problem somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. To check your transit time, chew 10 charcoal tablets before any one meal and record the date and time; watch the feces when you have BMs and record date and time when the last bit of blackened feces are eliminated--the time interval is the transit time. Fruits tend to have short transit times, grains and vegetables intermediate times and meats, poultry and fish long transit times. Diverticuli (small herniations through the muscular wall of the colon) can become inflamed (diverticulitis), as can the colon wall itself (colitis), both part of what is often called “inflammatory bowel disease,” with two main forms, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, often occurring together. Crohn’s disease of the colon is marked by an inflammatory reaction throughout the entire thickness of the bowel wall, and is a serious matter (incidence of Crohn’s disease is increasing in world populations eating a typical USA diet, while nearly nonexistent in cultures consuming a more primitive diet with lots of fruits and vegetables). Hemorrhoids (varicose veins of the rectum) are revealed by pain, itching, bleeding, and distension on straining to defecate. If the colon is dysfunctional, the body will find other areas of waste elimination in the form of infections, skin problems, nasal and lung congestion, bad breath (see Paper 18D) and body odor.

Causes of colon dysfunction are numerous. Transit times over 36 hours are often accompanied by fermentation, putrefaction, gas, bacterial imbalances, and bile acids converting to cancer-causing substances (the bile acid breakdown product also signals the liver to reduce its production of bile, thus leading to poor digestion of fats). Long transit times come from a lack of enough roughage in the diet, eating too many refined foods, diets high in meats, eating between meals, insufficient drinking of water (not beverages), and stress.

Diets low in fiber and high in refined carbohydrates tend to cause diverticuli and adverse bacterial changes. High fiber diets tend to favor beneficial bacteria such as lactobacilli, bifido bifidum, etc., whereas low fiber diets tend to produce toxic E. coli, especially if the refined carbohydrate intake is high with sugar and white flour foods. Allergies and antibiotic use are frequent causes. Colitis is favored by underactive adrenals, a weak immune system, allergies, and insufficient stomach acid. Hemorrhoids can be caused by underactive adrenals, a congested liver, and poor diets. Constipation can injure the colon (most causes of constipation are well known, but dysfunction of the liver, adrenals, thyroid and parathyroids may also be causative).

Remedies are implied in the above list of causes. Diet is especially important, and following the ER4YT diet should help greatly. Except for blood type Bs, staying off all milk and other dairy items for a month often gives real improvement; milk is a common allergen regardless of blood type, so even type Bs may benefit. Herbs such as slippery elm, red raspberry leaves, barberry, turkey rhubarb, fennel, red clover, chamomile, golden seal, and muellein often help. Three very good nutritional supplements, made by Standard Process Labs, are Fen-Cho (6 per day, to acidify the bowel and remove bowel toxins via the liver and kidneys), Spanish Black Radish (3 per day, draws out pus and other toxins; excellent for general lymph detoxification), and Choline (3 per day, for helping the liver detoxify toxins from the bowel). Probiotics are helpful in replenishing the normal bacterial flora of the colon, especially after the use of medical antibiotics and some other medications; remember that many foods now have antibiotics in them. The probiotics I have found most useful with clients are those produced by Natren and by DDS-l Labs. The North American Pharmacal (203-866-7664) makes four series of probiotics for blood types O, A, B, and AB, which may be taken on an on-going basis.

Chiropractic adjustment of the lumbar spine often helps, especially if there is also low-back pain. Daily rubbing for one minute each the entire thigh inner and outer surfaces, and the prominent hipbones (posterior superior iliac spine, PSIS) of the back adjacent to the fifth lumbar vertebra, should help, as may holding softly all four fingerpads of each hand on the horizontal bony ridge above each ear and halfway down the head (the parietal eminences) for perhaps several minutes. Massaging the colon, starting at the bottom right (cecum) and progressing up the right side (ascending colon) to just below the ribcage (hepatic flexure), across the abdomen (transverse colon) to the left side (splenic flexure), then down the left side (descending colon), then repeating several times, often helps loosen hardened fecal matter--you can do this yourself, although a skilled massage therapist can help here as in other health problems. Huge quantities of laxatives are sold in the USA, most of which are harmful and habit-forming. Among better ones are those with cascara sagrada as the main active ingredient; especially good is one called “Coloclenz,” recently renamed “Colon Support Formula,” which is a balanced herbal formula claimed to be non-habit-forming and to tonify the bowel (available through Carotec, Inc., 1-800-522-4279). Two other excellent ones are Intestinal Corrective Formula #1 (curacao and Cape Aloe leaf, senna leaves and pods, cascara sagrada aged bark, barberry rootbark, ginger rhizome, garlic bulb and African bird pepper) and Intestinal Corrective Formula #2 (flaxseed, apple fruit pectin, bentonite clay, psyllium seed and husk, slippery elm inner bark, marshmallow root, fennel seed, and activated willow charcoal), both formulated by Dr. Richard Schulze, and available from the American Botanical Pharmacy, 1-800- 437-2362. The #1 stimulates peristaltic action, and is cleansing, healing and strengthening. The #2 draws old fecal matter off colon walls, and detoxifies metals and over 3000 known drug residues. Both are powerful! Medical anti-diarrhea drugs are potentially dangerous, sometimes causing depression, headaches, vomiting, increased heart rate (tachycardia), and numbness (paresthesia) of arms and legs. Natural anti-diarrhea substances include bananas, carrots, sugar beets, pectin in apples, citrus fruit peel, kaolin clay, golden seal, marshmallow root, and Standard Process Labs Cholacol II.

We want to mention also the ileocecal valve (ICV) and Houston valve (HV). The ICV is a valve between the end of the small intestine’s ileum and the cecum at the start of the large intestine, situated beneath the midpoint of a line from the navel to the right anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), i.e., the most prominent bony part of the pelvis on the right front of the body. The ICV has a dual purpose, to prevent back-up of toxic fecal matter from the colon into the normally sterile small intestine (an “open” or “incompetent” ICV allows this back flow because the circular muscles encircling the ICV and whose function is to close the valve are weak), and to stop the small intestine’s contents from passing into the cecum before digestive processes are completed (a “closed” or “spastic” ICV keeps the valve closed too long and allows putrefaction because the longitudinal muscles which open the valve are malfunctioning). All sorts of symptoms, some bizarre, can occur with either type dysfunction. The HV is a set of two to four semilunar folds separating the last part of the colon (sigmoid) from the rectum, whose purpose is to prevent feces from passing through the anus until the person is ready to defecate. The HV is situated on the left side of the lower abdomen about in horizontal line with the ICV. Diagnosis of ICV and HV problems and their treatment can be accomplished in several ways, in which the best and cheapest (my bias) is the use of PKP kinesiology in which I am certified. Dysfunction of either ICV or HV is usually compensatory to some other body dysfunction. A beneficial nutritional supplement for either is Standard Process Labs Chlorophyll Complex Perles (perhaps 3 a day), or failing this a good oil-soluble chlorophyll supplement. [Dr. Chrostopher]

Most people have pounds of old dried fecal matter that is stored in the colon which is toxifying the system and keeping the food from being assimilated.

Colon Cancer
Americans have the highest incidence of Colon-Rectal Cancer of any nation in the world, and it is now KILLING more Americans than ever before in history.

Probiotics are thought by some to help prevent colon cancer.

[Dr. Schulze]

I had hundreds of patients with bowel cancer, many got rid of it using the bowel cleansing program alone.

I had a man from San Diego tell me this story just a few years ago. He was in his 60's and his son asked him to go to the doctor and get a sigmoidoscope check, a look into the bowel. This is getting to be a routine check now for older folks, to look for bowel cancer or other bowel disease.

Well, sure enough they saw it, a cancer growing in his sigmoid colon, and it had invaded into the muscle, maybe even farther. He also had around 35 polyps. The doctors wanted to admit him to the hospital immediately, for a colon resection. They wanted to gut him and carve out at least 12 inches of his colon. He was scared.

His son was a follower of my work, used my formulas and heard my stories, and he suggested that his Dad do my bowel cleansing program. The Dad asked the doctor if he could delay the colon surgery for a few months while he did an herbal bowel cleanse. The doctor said he was nuts; the herbs could be dangerous and even if they weren't, they were useless and that a delay of a few days, let alone months, could be suicidal.

The man told me that he was more afraid of some doctor sticking a knife up his ass than the cancer, so he went on my program.

[He did] Just three things, the Intestinal Corrective Formula #1 and the Intestinal Corrective Formula #2 and raw garlic, 8 cloves a day. He first got his bowel working more frequently with the number one formula and then started taking the number two formula.

He ended up taking 6 entire jars of the #2 formula over about 8 weeks, and then went back for another look by the doctor. The doctor was furious, and said that surgery may not even save him now because he delayed getting proper professional treatment by playing around with some hocus-pocus herbs.

But what the doctor saw shocked him. All 35 polyps were gone, disappeared, not a trace of even one, and the cancer looked like a dried up skeleton of a cancer. He said that when he slightly scraped it with a tool through the scope, that it just fell off the bowel, JUST FELL OFF!

Comfrey
(Symphytum officinale) Is a perennial plant common in moist meadows and other moist places in the U.S. and Europe. Comfrey has been used extensively as an anodyne, astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, hemostat, and vulnerary. A decoction of the rootstock makes a good gargle & mouthwash for throat inflammations, hoarseness, and bleeding gums. Drink this herb to take care of most digestive and stomach problems, for intestinal difficulties, for excessive menstrual flow, and to stop spitting blood due to internal bleeding. Powdered rootstock has been used internally to remedy bloody urine (hematuria), leucorrhea, diarrhea, gastro-intestinal ulcers, dysentery, and persistent coughs. Externally, use the powder as a hemostatic agent, and make a poultice for wounds, bruises, sores, and insect bites. The hot pulp of the rootstock makes a good external application for bronchitis, pleurisy, and for the pain & inflammation of pulled tendons.

Comfrey is a specific for the bronchials. It soothes, rebuilds, and can be used whenever a mucilaginous or demulcent herb is needed. It has saved many lives when used for hemorrhage of the lungs.

Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic condition that results when the heart muscle is unable to pump blood as quickly as is needed. It leads to breathlessness, fatigue, and accumulation of fluid in the lungs or the veins (primarily in the legs), or both. High blood pressure can cause congestive heart failure. Failure of the heart pump can also result from many other causes such as severe anemia, hyperthyroidism, heart attacks, and arrhythmias of the heart.

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the clear membrane that lines the eye. It is caused most commonly by infection with viruses or bacteria or an allergic reaction, though other causes exist, such as over exposure to sun, wind, smog, chorine, or contact lens solution. Pinkeye is a common name for conjunctivitis.

Connective Tissue
The tissue which binds together and is the support of the various structures of the body. It is made up of fibroblasts, fibroglia, collagen fibrils, and elastic fibrils. It is derived from the mesoderm and in a broad sense includes the collagenous, elastic, mucous, reticular, osseous, and cartilaginous tissue. Some also include the blood in this group of tissues. Connective tissue is classified according to concentration of fibers as loose (areolar) and dense, the latter having more abundant fibers than the former.

Constipation
Constipation results when food moves too slowly through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. No exact frequency of bowel movements or amount of symptoms associated with constipation (such as hard stools and excessive straining) precisely defines constipation. The most common cause is probably dietary. However, constipation can be a component of irritable bowel syndrome or can result from a wide range of causes, such as a drug side effect or physical immobility. Serious diseases, including colon cancer, can sometimes first appear as bowel blockage leading to acute constipation. Therefore, particularly constipation of recent onset should be diagnosed by a physician.

Constipation is often associated with food sensitivities and Leaky Gut Syndrome and is sometimes improved with the additon of probiotics.

[Dr. Schulze]

I studied and then taught for years with the late, great herbalist Dr. John Christopher. I interned with Dr. Jensen; I apprenticed with Paavo Airola, and studied with many more of the great old wise Nature Cure Doctors. They all had one thing in common. They ALL believed that the cause of most all disease was a dirty bowel, constipation, bad elimination, whatever you want to call it.

They ALL believed that by retaining pounds of this old infected material in Bowel Pockets (Diverticulosis), that this material would be reabsorbed into the body and infect nearby organs, make the blood toxic and cause disease. Now for the first time in the history of medicine, doctors are saying this is so.

Almost 20 years ago, when I first heard my late teacher Dr. Christopher talk about extreme constipation, I thought he was lying. I wanted to believe him, but when he started telling me that he had patients that hadn't pooped in a month, I thought that he was telling me a fish story, an herbal lie.

But soon after in my clinic I had a fashion model come to see me, a very beautiful girl, slim, 122 pounds, and only had ONE BOWEL MOVEMENT A MONTH for the last year and a half. I was shocked. Where did it go? I was ready to call David Copperfield or Siegfried and Roy, this was real magic.

That year I had many patients that only had one bowel movement a month and that was the record until a women came to see me, a 38 year old attorney that only went every other month, ONLY 6 BOWEL MOVEMENTS IN A YEAR!

Then I met Theresa from Santa Rosa, California. She only had 3 bowel movements during her pregnancy, one per trimester and 2 others that year, now the record holder was ONLY 5 BOWEL MOVEMENTS IN A YEAR.

Then last year I got a letter from a lady in Southern California thanking me for my Intestinal Formula # 1. In the letter she stated that before using my herbal formula she was only having one bowel movement every 6 months. THAT IS ONLY 2 BOWEL MOVEMENTS A YEAR, A RECORD HOLDER!!!!!.

"My husband sat on the toilet after dinner, and didn't get off until 3 in the morning. 7 hours later HE WAS 56 POUNDS LIGHTER. I always knew he was full of it!"

I knew a woman who had migraines. They were so bad that she would even go blind during some of the attacks. Sometimes she would fall to her knees in public or even blackout. She went to her medical doctor, who gave her some pain killers and they went away, but eventually came back.

She asked the doctor for something stronger. He eventually prescribed narcotics because the pain had taken over her life, and ruined it. The pain went totally away, but returned.

Out of frustration, she went to a Chiropractor who noticed that her cervical vertebrae were subluxated. After a series of adjustments her pain went away, but it eventually came back.

She then went to an Acupuncturist, who stuck her with needles in her back, neck, all over her body for congested shit The pain disappeared, and then returned.

Out of desperation, she went to a Rolfer, a deep tissue body worker, and he did some real restructuring of her neck, in fact her whole body, and the pain was gone, and then returned.

Finally, she ended up at an herbalist, one of Dr. Christopher's students. He prescribed her one of the Doc's formulae for pain, Wild Lettuce and Valerian root, a great formula. It was a miracle, her pain completely disappeared. Gone, but it eventually returned.

Three years of blinding pain, ruining her life and driving her insane, she finally came to my clinic doorstep and told me that story.

Within the first 2 minutes of her visit, I asked her one of my favorite questions; How often do you have a bowel movement? It turned out she only went once or twice a week. I suggested before we did anything, we do a thorough bowel cleansing routine for a couple of weeks. She was furious. She demanded my migraine formula. She was literally sobbing, in tears, begging, pleading for relief. I gave her the bowel cleansing program and sent her home.

After a few days, she called me and told me that her migraines were gone right after an amazing experience on the toilet, but was afraid they would return like they had done with ALL the other doctors and practitioners. I told her to keep taking the Intestinal Formulas.

Over the next few months, I put her through all of my programs and cleaned her colon a few more times, and the migraines never returned since. That was thirteen years ago.

All the other doctors, ALL of them were focusing on her neck, when they should have been focusing on her rear end. All the other doctors, even the so-called natural ones were still focusing on the symptom, and not the cause.

Copper
  • Year discovered: Circa 8000 B.C.
  • Atomic No.: 29
  • Symbol: Cu
  • Atomic weight: 63.54
  • Melting point: 1,083.4º C

Copper is a reddish metal that is widely used in industry because it is both an excellent conductor of electricity and has strong corrosion resistance properties. Used in a broad range of alloys, it is the basis for brass and bronze. With the advent of the telegraph, telephone and electric lights at the turn of the last century, large-scale copper mining became economically viable for the first mine. The first large mines were located in Montana, Arizona, Utah and Michigan. Copper was first discovered about 10,000 years ago in what is now northern Iraq, and deposits were worked in Egypt as long as seven millennia ago. The word "copper" is derived from "Cyprus," as that Mediterranean island was a primary source of the metal in ancient times.

Essential for healing, energy production, healthy nerves and joints, and hair and skin coloring, copper also aids in the formation of bone, hemoglobin, and red blood cells. (Note: excessive intake of copper can lead to toxicity, which has been linked to numerous health problems).

Cordyceps
Once the most rare and coveted supplement in China, Cordyceps was only available to the elite -- the emperor and wealthy individuals. Today, Cordyceps is one of the most highly regarded medicinal plants in Chinese Medicine. A natural Chinese supplement, cordyceps benefits several body systems, including the respiratory, glandular, circulatory and immune systems.

Cordyceps has traditionally been used to help the body build strength, endurance and stamina. Cordyceps has properties similar to those of ginseng which provide energizing support to people experiencing fatigue and exhaustion. In addition, it helps the body maintain proper blood viscosity.

Other benefits of Cordyceps include, aiding the upper respiratory tract and promote healthy lung function. It supports both male potency and female vitality, as well as, kidney health. Cordyceps also increases levels of naturally-produced antioxidants and is believed to promote longevity.

(Cordyceps is intended for adults. People using immune-suppressing drugs, anticoagulant drugs or bronchio-diolators, and pregnant or lactating women should first consult their doctor before taking Cordyceps.)

Cornsilk
Derived from the dried silky tassels found inside the husks of corn, Cornsilk contains iron, silica, potassium and vitamins B,C and K. Cornsilk has been used to soothe irritation, to the kidneys and bladder, often caused by burning and painful urination.

Cornsilk alleviates the irritation of the bladder and urinary tract by coating the membranes lining the urinary system walls. Cornsilk may also alleviate prostate disorders including difficulty in the beginning of urination.

Cornsilk has also been known to reduce the formation of sediments in the kidneys, relieve inflammation caused by urinary tract problems and help reduce water retention in the body. Cornsilk can also be found in some combinations for treating bed wetting problems in children.

Is a diuretic, and acts much like parsley. Cornsilk is both mild and non-toxic, and is contained in several over-the-counter (OTC) type diuretic products in Europe and America (where it use to be an officially recognized medicinal agent), and is also popular in China. Most herbalists around the world agree that Cornsilk directly reduces painful symptoms and swelling due to several inflammatory conditions, including cystitis, pyelitis, oligouria. hepatitis, and all edematous conditions.

This is a classic too, that we've talked about before. Doctors are cleaning out and replacing the coronary arteries, but not any other arteries in the body.

Costochondritis
A condition that is caused by inflammation of the costochondral joints. This is perceived as chest pain with tenderness to one or both sides of the sternum (breast bone). Chest pains are often worse when taking a deep breath or moving the chest wall. Treatment includes warm, wet compresses to the anterior chest wall and oral anti-inflammatory agents.

Also: Costo is essentially just a descriptive word for symptoms. Costo=ribs, chondro=cartilage, itis=inflammation/irritation. So it's basically saying that the cartilage portion of the ribs, where they attach to the sternum is irritated.

Often caused by the intercostal muscles never relaxing (BRACING!) even though the person continues to breathe. This is the same as trying to run with a charley horse---but one can STOP running!

Cough
Cough is a symptom of many diseases. Most coughs come from simple viral infections, such as the common cold or allergic reactions. Sometimes but not always mucus is produced with the cough. If the color is green or yellow, it may be a hint of a more serious bacterial infection, although this is not a reliable indicator. If the color is red, there may be bleeding in the lungs. Any cough that produces blood or blood-stained mucus, as well as any cough that lasts more than two weeks, requires a visit to a medical professional for diagnosis.

Cri-Du-Chat Syndrome
Cri Du Chat Syndrome ("Cry of the cat" in French) is a genetic disorder caused by the loss or misplacement of genetic material from the fifth chromosome. It was first identified in 1963 by Professor Lejeune, who also identified Downs Syndrome. He described the syndrome after the sound that many of the babies and young children make when crying.

This cry, along with some of the other notable features, is so characteristic of the syndrome that a doctor can usually identify the condition before a chromosome analysis has taken place.

As well as the physical features, Cri Du Chat causes a varied level of mental handicap. There are a few children who attend mainstream education, but the majority of the children need more specialised education. The long term outlook for children with Cri Du Chat is quite good.

Cro-Magnon
The first truly modern human. Originating around 70,000 to 40,000 B.C., Cro-Magnon migrated extensively from Africa into Europe and Asia. A master hunter, Cro-Magnon led a largely hunter-gatherer existence. Most of the digestive characteristics of people with Type O blood are derived from Cro-Magnon.

Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s disease of the colon is marked by an inflammatory reaction throughout the entire thickness of the bowel wall, and is a serious matter (incidence of Crohn’s disease is increasing in world populations eating a typical USA diet, while nearly nonexistent in cultures consuming a more primitive diet with lots of fruits and vegetables).

Crohn’s disease is a poorly understood inflammatory disease that affects the final part of the small intestine and the beginning section of the colon. It often causes bloody stools and malabsorption problems.

Many holistic practitioners consider the cause of Crohn's disease to be food sensitivities and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Parasitic infections may also contribute to Crohn's disease.
