5-HTP
5-hydroxy tryptophan - is an effective replacement for tryptophan. It is a breakdown product of tryptophan, an essential amino acid present in most protein foods. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin & works essentialy the same as does tryptophan, and in fact is one chemical step closer to serotonin.

5-HTP naturally increases the serotonin levels in the brain & body, whereas the antidepressants, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, Serzone, Luvox, Remeron, etc, unnaturally increase serotonin levels and have many significant side effects. Do not take 5-HTP together with these drugs or you may increase the serotonin too much & create unpleasant symptoms.

Tryptophan was used by millions of people for many years & is safe. It was removed from the market because of problems caused by a contaminant from a Japanese supplying company. Political reasons have kept it off the over-the-counter market. It is available by prescription from many compounding pharmacies.

The benefits of 5-HTP are virtually the same as those of tryptophan, being:

  • The support of feelings of well-being, calm, serenity, relaxation, & concentration.
  • Natural anti-depressant effects.
  • Augments light therapy for depression.
  • A natural sleep aid.
  • An anti-anxiety agent.
  • Helpful in agitated or mild manic states.
  • May inhibit aggressive behavior.
  • Reduces carbohydrate cravings, thus aiding blood sugar control & weight loss.
  • Reduces symptoms of PMS.
  • With fibromyalgia, reduces the number of tender points, anxiety, pain intensity & improves quality of sleep.
  • Aids in general chronic pain syndromes.

Equivalency to tryptophan: 500 mg tryptophan equals 100 mg 5-HTP.

Abnormal Pap Smear
Women are advised to have periodic Pap smears, because cancer of the cervix is a fairly common and sometimes fatal disease. A Pap smear checks cells from the cervix for any evidence of pre-cancerous or cancerous changes. If an abnormality is detected early, the doctor can prescribe effective treatment before the problem becomes more serious.

[Dr. Schulze]

"Pap smears were designed to get women back into a doctor's office."

They con women into either biopsies or surgery for their cervix before they really have any problem.

The pap smear itself can cause enough inflammation to give you a bad pap smear the next time.

The pap smears are classified into five categories ...1,2,3, and 4 and 5. Class one pap smear means nothing: you are fine. A class two pap smear and the gynecologist says, "Well, you know we got a problem here." All a class two pap smear means is inflammation is present.

You can have that inflammation from one sexual intercourse because the penis might bump against the cervix. You could have that inflammation from using a tampon that may have some bleach on it that caused some inflammation. You could have that inflammation just from taking antibiotics which gave you a little bit of a yeast infection. . .

You didn't even notice the cause of the inflammation, but a doctor goes, "Well, inflammation is present, we better go farther. Let's do a biopsy." In the old days, a biopsy used to be, "We'll take a little piece of that tissue."

Nowadays, they do what is called a 'cone-biopsy', which means they freeze the cervix and just take it off.

They take the whole tip of the cervix off. Then they figure, "Well look, why do a biopsy? We'll probably find cancer. We might as well get rid of the cervix and do it all in one treatment. And if we don't, she'll probably get cancer eventually."

If a woman is checked five years later and is full of cancer, she can sue for malpractice if the biopsy was not done, so a doctor has every reason to cover himself and do it.

So this can not only affect your future pregnancy, it can affect sexual intercourse; it can affect birth control, if you are using a cervical cap, and it can set up all sorts of problems. Of course, it can cause inflammation and disease which could lead to cancer.

ABO Blood Group
The most important of blood-typing systems, the ABO blood group is the determinant for transfusion reactions and organ transplantation. Unlike the other blood-typing systems, the ABO blood types have far-ranging significance other than transfusion or transplantation, including the determination of many of the digestive and immunological characteristics of the body. The ABO blood group is comprised of four blood types: O, A, B and AB. Type O has no true antigen, but carries antibodies to both A and B blood. Type A and type B carry the antigen named for their blood type and make antibodies to each other. Type AB does not manufacture any antibodies to other blood types because it has both A and B antigens. Anthropologists use the ABO blood types extensively as a guide to the development of early peoples. Many diseases, especially digestive disorders, cancer, and infection, express preferences, choosing between the ABO blood types. These expressions are not generally understood or appreciated by either physicians or the general population.

Abrasion
A spot rubbed bare of skin or mucous membrane. These are wounds to the skin common in childhood. A cut severs the skin, such as is inflicted by a sharp object; an abrasion rubs and/or scratches the surface, such as the common scraped knee; and a bruise results from forceful pressure against some object, where the skin is not broken so the blood rushes to the damaged tissue beneath the surface.

Acidosis
Acidosis is the reduction of the alkali reserve, due to an excess of acid-forming foods which are incompletely oxidized or poorly eliminated. This leads to the cause of stomach disorders. As Otto Mausert, N.D., states in his book Herbs (Elaine M. Mhur, Eugene, Oregon 97402), the body needs sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Acidosis is the depletion of these alkali reserves.

[Otto Mausert]

Stomach disorders--There are different diseases caused by acidosis coming under this heading, but the direct cause is the same for almost all of them. Eating fast, improper chewing, overloading, and eating the wrong kinds of food, are generally responsible for the troubles. The bad habits must be abandoned in order to affect a cure, as there is no medicine that can chew the food properly, or stop anybody from overloading, or prevent one from eating things that are hard to digest.

Food that is not properly masticated is retained longer in the stomach than it should be. As a result, it turns sour and ferments, creating an excessive amount of acid and gas. This in turn causes a great deal of irritation and inflammation on the mucous lining of the whole digestive system or tract. A catarrhal condition gradually sets in, and the lining becomes coated with a thick slimy mucus that interferes with the assimilation of the food. Decomposition and decay result. Poisonous matter therefrom is absorbed, which leads to severe disturbances of the stomach and bowels and gradually the whole system. The result of this is far reaching, as it finally leads to many other diseases to which the human race is heir. It is only too true, that most people dig their own graves with their teeth.

Let me therefore repeat, what we might call the Golden Rule of Health: eat slowly, chew food well, and don't overload. Eat only plain food, plenty of fresh vegetable matter, salads, ripe fruits. The richer foods, however, such as meat, eggs, starches, sweets, etc., should be taken more moderately and only in proportion to the amount of work one does. In that way the food can be balanced properly and digested more completely. Failure to live up to these simple natural rules will gradually lead to the operating table--but the operation will not remove the underlying cause, and consequently will not bring the desired relief."

Acne
Acne is a skin condition characterized by reddened, inflamed lesions (sometimes called pustules or “whiteheads”) on the face, neck, shoulders, and elsewhere. Acne occurs most commonly in teenagers and to a lesser extent in young adults. The condition results in part from excessive stimulation of the skin by androgens (male hormones). Bacterial infection of the skin also appears to play a role.

Food sensitivities seem to play a role in acne also.

[Dr. Christopher]

The primary lesion or blackhead develops into a pinkish pustule or nodule. A teenager, sometime pre-teen, often breaks out with a horrible skin condition in which pustules and their scars may cover the skin, which is often coarse and oily. This causes an inferiority complex and other emotional disruption. At this time they may become irritable, snap and snarl at people. They are impossible to live around--why? They are growing into adulthood so rapidly that they are maturing faster than they are equipped.

As the teenagers grow up, they, like everybody else today, eat devitalized, dead, "mucus-loaded" junk materials that could only be called "garbage food" or meals without energy and life building materials in them. The rapid change from childhood to adulthood requires foods rich in vitamins, minerals, etc., needed in the healthy body. Processed foods are low or lacking in natural hormone and estrogen materials needed in the growth transition to adulthood. The young person's body realizes the lack and the need, and tries to pull the required materials from the body. If they are not there, the strain of trying to produce them causes irritation, a nasty snarling disposition, and a pimply complexion.

We blame the child for not being cooperative, for craving sweets, excess meats and bakery products. The body is craving vitamins and minerals and basic needs for health, and that "craving" is termed "hidden hunger." To pacify this hungry gnawing feeling, the young person stuffs on junk food, adding insult to injury. From this diet comes acne, boils, irritability, the sick and sad youth. The girls have difficult menstrual periods with cramps, flooding, or off-timed cycles, and the boys have a tendency toward early prostrate trouble and unhealthy sex drive.

[Dr. Stoll]

Acne is a kind of sebaceous cyst. The "cure" for acne is to take the pressure off the Hypothalamic fight or flight storage. To do that, the single most important thing is 'Skilled Relaxation'. However, a whole foods diet, and/or therapeutic doses of food supplements & essential oils, and exercise greatly magnify the effect of SR; and so most people will see faster results by doing all three. These are the 3 legs of the wellness stool so often mentioned on Dr. Stoll's website.

Dr. Stoll says: "Acne is caused by imbalances in the normal hormonal matrix that makes up us all. Women have several hormonal stressors that we men do not: pregnancy, menopause, menses, nursing and a generally more responsive hormonal net than men have. ANYONE with acne past puberty has to have a glandular imbalance that is showing acne as just the tip of the iceberg of what effect this will have on the rest of their health for the rest of their lives. Even if you could totally eliminate the acne with a pill, all you would be doing is turning off the message your bodymind is trying to send you about the iceberg."

Acu-Yoga
Acupressure techniques designed specifically for self-application.

Acu-Yoga uses whole body postures rather than just hand pressure.

Acupressure
Therapy which involves pressing points on the body with the fingers to alter the internal flow of chi in order to strengthen it, to calm it, or to remove a blockage of the flow. The acupressure points are aligned along the body meridians.

By applying thumb and fingertip pressure, specific symptoms are relieved and balance is restored to the entire body. Used by the Chinese for at least 5,000 years, its practitioners find it highly effective for managing stress and preventing injuries, treating sciatica, arthritis, headaches, fatigue and general irritability.

One thousand hours of training are required to become an acupressure therapist. An additional 150 hours of training at a fully approved school are needed for certification.

Acupuncture
Originating in China over 5,000 years ago, acupuncture is the art of inserting fine needles at specific points along the body’s meridians to stimulate, disperse and regulate the flow of "chi." To determine acupuncture points, a pulse and tongue diagnosis is required, along with observation and questioning of the patient. Acupuncture is used to relieve symptoms, especially pain relief, as well as to promote general health and well-being. In the U.S., many states license practitioners (a requirement of three years of full-time study minimum is typical), but in other states the term "acupuncturist" may not imply credentials.

The Chinese practice of inserting needles into specific points (acupoints) along the "meridians" of the body. It is used to relieve pain, to induce surgical anesthesia, and for preventative and therapeutic purposes. The insertion of the needles stimulates the acupuncture points and alters the flow of chi.

ADD
Attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder (ADD or ADHD) is defined as age-inappropriate impulsiveness, lack of concentration, and sometimes excessive physical activity. ADD has been associated with learning difficulties and lack of social skills. Obviously what constitutes “normal” in these areas covers a wide spectrum, and thus it is unclear which child suffers true ADD and which child is just more rambunctious or rebellious than another. No objective criteria exists to accurately confirm the presence of ADD.

Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut syndrome are implicated in many cases of Attention Deficit Disorder.

Addiction
Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut syndrome are implicated in many cases of addiction.

[Dr. Stoll] It has been accepted for years that exactly the same place in the brain is affected by ALL addictions. SO, when it is stimulated by no matter which addiction, it influences all the rest. Perhaps a good book about addiction in general would help you?

I can remember, nearly 40 years ago, when I was addicted to Bridge for about a year, I had a terrible time avoiding smoking at those times I played Bridge. I thought at the time that it was simply "association" but now, I wonder.

Association certainly has something to do with it but it is NOT the only explanation.

Addison’s Disease
When a person's adrenal glands become so exhausted that they simply do not function anymore, the condition is called Addison's disease, which is a terminal disease. It is characterized by blotchy pigment appearing suddenly on large parts of the body, intolerance to heat or cold, reduction in capacity for muscular work, weakness, inability to stand any stress or emotional excitement, whether positive or negative, sometimes nervous breakdown or even insanity, complete exhaustion, feeling that one is going to die, inability to digest food, and other similar symptoms. The synthetic cortisone is given to supply the need of the natural substance, but it produces complications, side effects and eventual disillusionment as it will not in any way heal the adrenals.

Adenine
A major purine base; in animal and plant cells it usually occurs condensed with ribose or deoxyribose to form the nucleosides adenosine and deoxyadenosine. As such, it is a component of nucleic acids, of certain nucleotides, and of many coenzymes. Symbol A. The official preparation [USP] contains 98 to 102 percent adenine, calculated on the dried basis, and is used to improve the preservation of whole blood.

Adenoids
Adenoids are big lymph nodes in the nasopharynx (the junction between your nose & throat).
Adenosine
A purine nucleoside, adenine linked by its N9 nitrogen to the C1 carbon of ribose. It is a component of ribonucleic acid and its nucleotides play major roles in the reactions and regulation of metabolism. Symbol A.

Adenosine Diphosphate

Adenosine Monophosphate
a nucleotide involved in energy metabolism.

Adenosine Triphosphate
A nucleotide involved in energy metabolism and required for RNA synthesis; it occurs in all cells and is used to store energy in the form of high-energy phosphate bonds.

Sixty percent of the food you eat is used to produce your source of energy called ATP. It is made when two Hydrogen atoms combine in your cells with Oxygen converting a compound into ATP. This is why, without Hydrogen you would have no energy.

When ATP is formed, as above, the two Hydrogen atoms which combine with Oxygen then produce, as the by-product, pure water, which is also critical to life. There is no toxicity.

Adrenal Glands
The adrenal glands, seated on top of each kidney, are part of the endocrine system, that is: the internally secreting or ductless glands which release their secretions directly into the blood stream. The adrenals, often referred to as the suprarenal, are the Creator's most intricate chemical factories. "It would take acres of chemical plants" to synthetically manufacture "the 50 odd hormones or hormone-like substances" produced by the adrenal glands. (Ratcliff, 1975, p. 69) Not only do these hormones control all the oxidation processes of the human body through the anterior pituitary body, but they regulate growth, mental balance, sexual development and maintenance, and a host of other phenomena... The adrenals, the pituitary, and the thyroid are functionally united comprising the adrenal system. THE ADRENALS ARE ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO LIFE.

Age of Aquarius
We must maintain health and ward off disease as we enter this time of major Earth changes. First, let us all remember that if one is truly spiritual and consciously in contact with Source all else is secondary. We must keep ourselves free of fear, know that although conditions may come to seem to some people unbearable and hopeless from a human viewpoint we chose prior to this incarnation to experience these changes, and that many of us will see this as a glorious opportunity to move into a new consciousness in our journey back home to Oneness with All That Is. Let us all do what we can to help “others” sense this opportunity.

Because of the new energies coming into Mother Earth and her decreasing magnetic field, changes in our DNA, etc., it is important to have our auras balanced properly prior to these major changes. It is also important to keep our spinal vertebrae, cranial bones and pelvic bones in alignment for our nervous systems to function properly.

Agglutinate
Derived from the German word "to glue." The process by which cells are made to adhere to one another, usually through the actions of an agglutinin, such as an antibody or a lectin. Certain viruses and bacteria also are capable of agglutinating blood cells. Many agglutinins, particularly the food lectins, are blood type spe-cific. Certain foods clump only the cells of one blood type, but do not react with the cells of another type.

AIDS
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a condition in which the immune system becomes severely weakened and loses its ability to fight infections. Most scientists believe that the disease results from infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIDS is an extremely complex disorder, and no cure is currently available. Certain pharmaceuticals appear to be capable of slowing the progression of the disease. In addition, various nutritional factors may be helpful. However, because of the complicated nature of this disorder, medical supervision is strongly recommended with regard to dietary changes and nutritional supplements.

ALC
Acetyl-L-Carnitine - It is the acetylated ester form of the amino acid, L-Carnitine. ALC is an exciting relatively new addition to the growing armamentarium of natural aids to boosting & sustaining good cognitive function.

ALC is used in Europe to help many forms of senile dementia & to improve brain blood flow disorders.

Research shows Acetyl-L-Carnitine:

  • Improves memory, attention span, & mental performance in normal individuals as well as those with cognitive impairment.
  • Alleviates depression.
  • Improves blood flow to your brain & heart.
  • Helps Alzheimer's & Parkinson's disease.
  • Reduces brain cell death, maintains nerve growth factor & helps nourish brain cells.
  • Improves communication between the right & left side of your brain.
  • Improves immune functioning.
  • Helps reduce high blood sugar levels.
  • Helps burn body fat by promoting the use of fatty acids for energy.

Mitochondria are small structures found within all cells. This is where energy is produced in all cells in your body. ALC restores mitochondria membrane function & fluidity to that of a younger organism & thus helps restore mental & physical energy & function.

Alchemical Bodywork
Bodywork techniques synthesized with hypnosis. This process allows practitioners to address the emotional source of chronic tension and pain held in the body, and provides techniques to facilitate its release.

Alcoholism
A majority of people who have been drinking alcohol and decide to stop (often for health-related reasons) are able to do so without much trouble. Alcohol withdrawal typically becomes difficult only when problem drinkers—alcoholics—attempt to quit. Almost inevitably, alcoholics need help in achieving this goal. Sometimes, this help requires medical intervention in detoxification centers.

Although treatments in “detox” centers may involve natural substances, such as B vitamins and vitamin C, these substances are often administered intravenously and therefore require a doctor’s intervention. Oral vitamins are not believed to be very helpful in the initial stages of detoxification, because excessive drinking damages the gastrointestinal tract, leading to malabsorption. Intravenous (IV) administration of vitamins bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and therefore supplies vitamins even in the absence of a healthy gut.

Aldehyde
Chemicals known as acetaldehydes accumulate in your body from alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, chronic candida infections & vehicle exhaust fumes. The aldehydes inhibit co-enzyme A & thus decrease energy production. Chronic aldehyde exposure also contributes to heart disease & has damaging effects on brain function. Acetaldehyde also impairs the red blood cells delivery of oxygen to your body's cells. It also induces a deficiency of vitamin B1, B3, & pyridoxal-5-phosphate. Pantethine has been found to help decrease aldehyde levels.

Alexander, F. Matthias
Alexander (1869-1955) was an Australian actor and teacher. He originally developed the Alexander Technique as a method of vocal training for singers and actors in the 1890s. While Alexander was developing his method of voice training, he realized that the basis for all successful vocal education was an efficiently and naturally functioning respiratory mechanism. So, in teaching voice, Alexander focused primarily on helping the breathing mechanism to function more effectively. Because of his focus on "re-educating" the breathing mechanism, some of Alexander's students, who had come to him for vocal training, found that their respiratory difficulties also improved. These improvements were recognized by medical doctors who began referring their patients with respiratory ailments to Alexander for help. In this way, F.M. Alexander's technique of vocal training developed into a technique he termed "respiratory re-education."

The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a means for changing habits and improving coordination. The Technique can have great benefits for musicans dealing with excess tension, stress or pain problems and for musicians wanting to enhance performance skills and expression. The Alexander Technique is included in the curriculum of a number of conservatories and university music departments.

Young children have this natural poise. If you watch a toddler in action, you will see an erect spine, free joints and a large head balancing easily on a little neck. A healthy child walks and plays with regal posture. Barring birth defects, we all began that way. But over the years, we often lose that spontaneity and ease.

Alfalfa
Alfalfa was discovered by the Arabs and is one of the first known herbs. They called it the "father of all foods." This is interesting as they knew only by evidential experience. It is only in recent years that we moderns are rediscovering its valuable nutritive properties.

A vitality augmenter. The idea of humans consuming something that is generally grown as feed for animals has never really gained widespread acceptance with the general public. But considered as a spring tonic, Alfalfa has no equal. It is one of the best single sources of protein, and is very high in vitamins A, D, E, B-6, and K, calcium, magnesium, chlorophyll, phosphorous, iron, potassium, trace minerals and several digestive enzymes. Alfalfa is one of the most studied plants available. We know it contains many important substances, including several saponins, many sterols, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, acids, vitamins, amino acids, natural sugars, proteins (25% by weight), minerals, trace elements and other essential nutrients. Alfalfa saponins inhibit increases in blood cholesterol levels by 25% in laboratory experiments with monkeys, rats and rabbits. Other components of Alfalfa greatly enhance the action of the saponins by binding the bile acids that are necessary for cholesterol absorption. French scientists have shown that Alfalfa can reduce tissue damage caused by another modern medical technique - radiotherapy. Also of interest are the effects of vitamin K, found in high concentrations in Alfalfa. In man, dietary vitamin K can remedy bleeding disorders which occur when the delivery of bile to the bowel is hindered, as for example in obstructive jaundice or biliary fistula. It is also important to remember that Alfalfa is a fiber. As such, it has been shown, along with Bran and Pectin, to bind & neutralize various types of agents carcinogenic to the colon. Finally, some work suggests that Alfalfa induces activity in a complex cellular system that inactivates dietary chemical carcinogens in the liver and small intestine before they have a chance to do the body any harm.

[Dr. Christopher]

In alfalfa we have a plant that even animals such as dogs and cats will go and find when they are sick. They are "led" to this and other herbs by instinct which tells them it will heal them. Perhaps even humans have such an instinct, if they only would "listen." As a small child, and a very sickly one at that, I used to go out in the springtime and pick young alfalfa leaves and eat them. It seemed as though some "force" would lead me to them. For this I am grateful, because with this guidance I feel I was given additional help to fight off some of the sicknesses with which I was born.

I remember reading, years back, the story of a father, mother and some children who were in a concentration camp where the food and living conditions were far below standard. People were dying from malnutrition, but this family found a small clump of alfalfa growing in the corner of the concentration camp grounds. Each day they would chew thoroughly a sprig or two of the alfalfa and found as a result that the entire family felt strong and healthy. They would beg others there to do the same, but were laughed at and ridiculed. However, they continued eating the alfalfa (new growth coming on continually) as long as they remained imprisoned in that area. When they were released they were in good health, while their friends who had refused to - follow their advice had either died or were very sickly and suffering from severe malnutrition.

Dr. Christopher has a newsleter about Alfalfa here .

Alkaloid
Any of a class of organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and usually oxygen, that are often derived from plants. The name means alkalilike, but some alkaloids do not exhibit alkaline properties. Many alkaloids, though poisons, have physiological effects that render them valuable as medicines. For example, curarine, found in the deadly extract curare, is a powerful muscle relaxant; atropine is used to dilate the pupils of the eye; and physostigmine is a specific for certain muscular diseases. Narcotic alkaloids used in medicine include morphine and codeine for pain relief and cocaine as a local anesthetic. Other common alkaloids include caffeine, LSD, quinine, seratonin, strychnine, and nicotine.

Allergies
Allergic reactions occur when a foreign nontoxic substance – called an "allergen" – is mistakenly attacked by the body’s immune system. The immune system chemically triggers cells within the skin, blood and gastrointestinal tracts to release the chemical "histamine". Histamines are the cause of allergic symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing and congestion. Although it is generally understood that allergies are not preventable once developed, it is possible to suppress the symptoms resulting from allergies through the use of natural "antihistamines".

Allicin
The allicin in garlic does not exist unless you make it. In other words, there isn't any allicin in garlic to begin with.

There is only dry fiber cells and liquid acid cells. When you cut or crush garlic, the acid pours on the fiber and allicin is the result of that chemical reaction. What works in the garlic really isn't there until we chew it, or slice it, or bruise it. That is why garlic doesn't have much of a smell until you really activate it.

The allicin is created by the acid cells being ruptured and mixing with the fiber of garlic. It's an immediate chemical reaction and allicin is produced. That's why a fresh garlic clove doesn't have much smell. But when you chop it up, boom, you're creating chemistry in your kitchen.

Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has been used by mankind for several thousand years and over the centuries there have been many references to Aloe Vera in many cultures: from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, as well as in the literature of the Indian and Chinese peoples. Several famous physicians such as Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides and Galen, the father of modern medicine, who first described how the circulation worked, all used Aloe Vera as part of their therapeutic armoury.

An exceptional healing plant with an extensive history of use covering 18 centuries. World-wide, there exist hundreds of species of this succulent, yucca-like plant, but those most often used are Aloe barbandensis, Aloe perryi, Aloe ferros, and the ever-popular houseplant Aloe Vera, whose fresh leaves can serve as an effective treatment for minor burns, abrasions and cuts. Aloe Vera gel, derived from the “mucilaginous cells” contained inside the leaves, is widely used in a variety of forms such as lotions, moisturizers, cosmetics, and shampoos. Aloe powder, derived from the tough outer leaf of the plant, is a strong 'cathartic' consumed internally as a cleanser, and often touted as a treatment for a variety of conditions ranging from liver disease to AIDS. Clinical evidence supports many of the health claims attributed to Aloe Vera. Researchers have found that fresh Aloe gel promotes wound healing by speeding up the growth of skin cells and aiding recovery from surgery. Aloe has also proved effective in treating pressure sores, chronic leg ulcers, and frostbite. Aloe Vera has also been shown to have strong antibacterial and antifungal properties against a broad range of microbes. Carrisyn, an extract of aloe, has shown recent evidence of being able to inhibit a number of viruses 'in-vitro', including the strains responsible for herpes simples, measles, and HIF. Carrisyn appears to work by stimulating the immune system to trigger the production of T cells, thereby increasing immune function. Other active ingredients of the Aloe plant include 'salicylates', which control inflammation and pain, and an enzyme that inhibits 'bradykinin', the chemical messenger responsible for transmitting pain signals through the nerves. Aloe also contains 'magnesium lactate', a chemical known to inhibit the release of histamines responsible for skin irritation and itching.

Alpha-linolenic acid (LNA, ALA,ALENA, 18:3w3)
An 18-carbon fatty acid with 3 double bonds, positioned between w carbons 3 and 4, 6 and 7, and 9 and 10. It is the second of the 2 essential fatty acids. Our body cannot make it, requires it for life, and must therefore obtain it from food. It is vital to optimum health. LNA is extremely sensitive to destruction by light, oxygen, and high temperature. Deficiency is linked to degenerative disease. Modern diets contain only 1/6 as much LNA as traditional Western diets in 1850. LNA inhibits tumor formation. LNA sources include flax and hemp seeds and their oils.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid
This unique antioxidant plays an important role in metabolizing glucose and converting food into energy. Alpha-lipoic acid has received a lot of attention from the medical community recently because it can neutralize free radicals anywhere in the body - providing widespread protection for all cells. It also 're-charges' other antioxidants, such as vitamins C & E.

Lipoic acid is a vitamin-like enzyme co-factor which can be produced in your body, but usually in insufficient amounts for optimal health. It is found in potatoes, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, beets, & red meat. It is classified as “essential” because it is a vital component of the energy reactions that turn glucose into energy.

Lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant with 2 unique characteristics not found in other antioxidants. First, it is both fat & water soluble allowing it to go anywhere in your body to carry out its function. Second, it has the power to enhance & restore other antioxidants such as vitamin C, E. beta carotene, & selenium, with a crucial benefit being its ability to regenerate the all-important glutathione.

Lipoic acid has been solidly studied & the scientific evidence shows it:

  • Is necessary for converting glucose into chemical energy.
  • Decreases insulin resistance (which is a major factor in diabetes, obesity, & heart disease.
  • Increases the efficiency of insulin.
  • Helps some diabetics reduce their reliance on insulin (diabetics using this product must monitor their blood sugar & make appropriate insulin adjustments.)
  • Helps to prevent the complications of diabetes, such as neuropathy, cataracts, & macular degeneration.
  • In some cases has reversed neuropathy (a painful nerve degeneration.)
  • Is a useful adjunctive therapy in diabetic cardiomyopathy.
  • Improves nerve conduction.
  • Is helpful with chemical hypersensitivity syndrome.
  • Helps protect the liver when there is high alcohol intake.
  • Has liver protecting action in cirrhosis & various forms of hepatitis.
  • Used to decrease elevated liver enzymes of unknown cause.
  • Helps with drug induced liver injury.
  • Has protective & curative effects in heavy metal & toxic poisoning such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, nickel, iron & copper.
  • Exhibits an antitoxic effect in poisoning by mercuric chloride, arsenobenzoles, carbon tetrachloride, aniline dyes, & phosphorus.
  • Is considered the only antidote to mushroom poisoning.
  • Improves memory in older but not younger laboratory animals.
  • Reduces cataract formation.
  • Promotes the growth of new nerve fibers & may be able to help regenerate brain cells with long-term supplementation.
  • Helps prevent heart disease by protecting LDL cholesterol from oxidation. Oxidized LDL cholesterol tends to stick to the walls of arteries, resulting in plaque build up that can increase atherosclerosis.
  • Protects tissues from damage associated with low oxygen supply such as following stroke, heart attack, trauma & surgery.
  • Regulates aspects of your immune system & can inhibit the replication of HIV-I & other viruses as a natural protease inhibitor.

Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that occurs in the later years of life. Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease develop progressive loss of memory and gradually lose the ability to function and to take care of themselves. The cause of this disorder is not known. Some studies suggest that it may be related to an accumulation of aluminum in the brain.1 Despite this, aluminum toxicity has been studied in humans, and it is quite distinct from Alzheimer’s disease.2 Therefore, the importance of aluminum in causing Alzheimer’s disease remains an unresolved issue.

Amino
The monovalent chemical group -NH2 (Nitrogen). As a prefix (amino-), it indicates the presence in a compound of the group -NH2.

Amino Acids
an amphoteric organic acid containing the amino group NH2 (Nitrogen); esp.: any of the alpha-amino acids that are the chief components of proteins and are synthesized by living cells or are obtained as essential components of the diet.

The term "amino acid" refers to the components of protein.

The word "amino" means, simply, containing nitrogen.

There are about 20 different amino acids that we deal with in ordinary life.

There is such a thing as a "balanced protein." The body needs many different amino acids in proper balance to make those building blocks. For instance, the egg is a perfect protein -- in that it has all the different amino acids in exactly the right balance so that the entire amount of the egg can be used to build the structure of the body. None is wasted.

Amino Acids are essential to the health and proper functioning of just about every part of the body. They are the building blocks of proteins, and proteins are part of every living cell. As a matter of fact, after water, amino acids make up the greatest portion of human body weight.

When you take some other proteins than eggs, the amino acids in that substance may be "out of balance," which means that the body tries to find OTHER amino acids from other foods you may have eaten -- to balance.

Let's say that you eat a batch of different foods and when you add up all the different amino acids in this batch they are perfectly balanced. Then ALL of that protein will be used to build and repair your body -- your organs, lungs, tissue, bones, skin, etc.

But, let's say that you eat a batch of food which, for whatever reason, contained NONE of one essential amino acid. Then ALL of the other protein you ate would be worthless as far as building body structure is concerned. The body would convert it to sugar and use it for energy or make it into fat. You can't store these various amino acids waiting until a needed one comes along.

An essential amino acid is any one of the amino acids that are essential for metabolism, health, and growth, but that are not synthesized (manufactured) by the body and thus must be obtained from food. For humans, these include isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenyalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, and (during growth periods) arginine and histidine. A nonessential amino acid is an amino acid that is synthesized by the body and thus not specifically required in the diet. These include alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.

Even though cysteine, for instance, is one of the "non essential" amino acids (because the body can make it internally), it is still "necessary" for body-building purposes. If there is not enough of the raw materials in the food for the body to make cysteine, then as far as that batch of food is concerned the food is an unbalanced protein

AMMA Therapy
A combination of many therapeutic massage techniques include shiatsu, reflexology, deep fascial and connective tissue massage, Swedish massage and the skeletal manipulation of chiropractic. In Chinese, amma means "push-pull." Practitioners attempt to balance the proper energy flow along meridians. The interest in AMMA has been regenerated by Korean-born Tina Sohn.

Ammonia
A colorless alkaline gas, NH3, of a penetrating odor and soluble in water, forming ammonia water.

Ammonia is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of fertilizers, explosives, and any number of important chemicals and products. In organisms, ammonia is a building block for proteins and other nitrogen containing compounds such as the bases in DNA. While ammonia makes up a significant fraction of the atmospheres of some of the giant gas planets and of some comets, there is little free ammonia on the modern Earth. It is widely believed that ammonia was a constituent of the atmosphere of the primordial Earth, but that as life evolved and released oxygen into the atmosphere, any ammonia in the atmosphere was efficiently oxidized by the oxygen. To compensate for the loss of ammonia, life evolved a number of enzymatic pathways to create ammonia, or to use other forms of nitrogen such as nitrates to build required molecules. An example of an organizm that evolved the ability to create ammonia is the bacteria that grow on plants such as legumes (peas, beans, etc.) The bacteria grows on the roots of these plants and supplies the plant with the ammonia necessary to build proteins. This organism uses an enzyme that contains a very complex core consisting of iron and molybdenum to reduce nitrogen to ammonia.

Androgens

High insulin levels somehow boost the production of androgens.

Anemia
A reduction below normal in the number of erythrocytes per cu. mm., in the quantity of hemoglobin, or in the volume of packed red cells per 100 ml. of blood which occurs when the equilibrium between blood loss (through bleeding or destruction) and blood production is disturbed.

Anemia is a reduction in the number of red blood cells (RBCs), in the amount of hemoglobin in those cells, and in another related index called “hematocrit.” All three are measured on a complete blood count, which doctors shorten to “CBC.” As opposed to all other common causes for anemia, iron-deficiency anemia also causes RBCs to be abnormally small.

Since RBCs are needed to carry oxygen to tissues, anemia impairs oxygen supply to the body. Some common symptoms of anemia include fatigue, lethargy, weakness, poor concentration, and impaired immune function. In iron-deficiency anemia, fatigue also occurs because iron is needed to make optimal amounts of ATP—the energy source the body runs on. This fatigue usually begins long before a person is anemic. Said another way, a lack of anemia does not rule out iron deficiency in tired people.

To rule out an iron deficiency in the absence of anemia, a doctor needs to run common lab tests (either serum ferritin or the combination of total iron binding capacity and serum iron). People should never be told their body has sufficient iron simply because they are not anemic. Iron deficiency, whether it is severe enough to lead to anemia or not, can have many non-nutritional causes (such as excessive menstrual bleeding, bleeding ulcers, hemorrhoids, gastrointestinal bleeding caused by aspirin or related drugs, frequent blood donations, or colon cancer) or can be caused by a lack of dietary iron. Menstrual bleeding is probably the leading cause of iron deficiency. However, despite common beliefs to the contrary, only about one premenopausal women in ten is iron deficient.1 Deficiency of vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin B6, or copper can cause other forms of nutrition anemias.

Angina
Chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart is known as angina or angina pectoris. Hardening of the coronary arteries (atherosclerosis) that feed the heart is usually the underlying problem.

There are three main types of angina. The first is called stable angina. This type of chest pain comes on during exercise and is both common and predictable. Stable angina is most associated with atherosclerosis. A second type, called variant angina, can occur at rest or during exercise. This type is primarily due to sudden coronary artery spasm, though atherosclerosis may also be a component. The third, most severe type is called unstable angina. It occurs with no predictability and can quickly lead to a heart attack. Anyone with significant, new chest pain or a worsening of previously mild angina must seek medical care immediately.

Anti-Oxidant
What that word means is "against" oxygen. This is so because the most common form of dangerous free radicals is OXYGEN. In other words, we must have oxygen to live, and breathe it in all the time. But, an atom of oxygen, usually so necessary and vital to our lives, can become actually a source of disease and death. Since oxygen is the most common type of free radical (there are others, too), the method of neutralizing all free radicals has taken on the name "anti" "oxygen" or "anti-oxidant." These substances are ONLY against the free radical form of oxygen.

They give electrons to the free radicals to neutralize them and make them harmless. Our body fluids have a certain natural ability to do this, along with the popular antioxidant supplements. However, with the high level of free radicals in our bodies today, we need a way to greatly increase that ability.

There are substances which neutralize free radicals. The best known is probably Vitamin C, Selenium and Pine Bark extract, or grape seed extract but there are others also. The most powerful is a new substance called Microhydrin. The difference in power between Microhydrin and any other anti-oxidant is enormous -- it is a factor of thousands of times more effective than any other anti-oxidant, or free radical fighter.

Anti-Plague Formula®

Anti-plague formula: Fresh Garlic juice, Apple cider Vinegar, Glycerine, honey, fresh Comfrey Root, Wormwood, Lobelia, Marshmallow Root, Oak Bark, Black Walnut Bark, Mullein Leaf, Skullcap and Uva Ursi.

This is the best remedy for colds, flu, or any communicable disease. This formula strengthens and stimulates your immune system and should be used as a tonic and preventative at the dosage of one tablespoon of syrup per day. If infected, the dosage changes to one tablespoon every hour.

Anti-Plague has also been called Four Thieves. The origin of the name "Four Thieves" is as follows. "It in Marseilles, a garlic-vinegar preparation known as the Four Thieves was credited with protecting many of the people when a plague struck that city. Some say that the preparation originated with four thieves who confessed that they used it with complete protection against the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead. Others claim that a man named Richard Forthave developed and sold the preparation, and that the "medicine" was originally referred to as Forthave's. However, with the passing of time, his surname became corrupted to Four Thieves."

Antibody
A class of chemicals, called the immunoglobulins, made by the cells of the immune system to specifically tag or identify foreign material within the body of the host. An immunoglobulin molecule that has a specific amino acid sequence by virtue of which it interacts only with the antigen that induced its synthesis in cells of the lymphoid series (especially plasma cells), or with antigen closely related to it.

Antibodies combine with specific markers—antigens—found on viruses, bacteria, or other toxins, and agglutinate them. The immune system is capable of manufacturing millions of different antibodies against a wide variety of potential invaders. Individuals of Type O, Type A, or Type B blood carry anti-bodies to other blood types. Type AB, the universal recipient, manufactures no antibodies to other types.

Antigen
A usually protein or carbohydrate substance (as a toxin or enzyme) capable of stimulating an immune response.

The chemical markers which determine blood type are considered blood type antigens because other blood types may carry antibodies to them. Antigens are commonly found on the surface of germs, and are used by the immune system to detect foreign material. Specialized antigens are often made by cancer cells, these being called tumor antigens. Many germs and cancer antigens are clever impersonators who can mimic the blood type of the host in an effort to escape detection. The chemical markers which determine blood type are considered blood type antigens because other blood types may carry antibodies to them. • Atomic weight: 121.75
  • Melting point: 630.74º C

Antimony has several forms, the most common of which is a hard, silver-white crystalline solid. Lustrous and extremely brittle, antimony has a boiling point of 1,380 degrees C, melting point of 630.5 degrees C and specific gravity of 6.691. The Greek derivative of the word antimony means "a metal rarely found alone." In nature, antimony has a strong affinity for sulfur and some metallic elements, including lead, copper and silver. Antimony has poor electrical and heat conductivity, and is generally used as an alloy with other metals. More than 2,000 years ago, the natural sulfide of antimony, stibnite, was used as both a medicine and a facial cosmetic. Today, the most significant of the antimony compounds, antimony trioxide, is employed in flame-retardants for textiles, plastics, building materials, adhesives and other materials. This use accounts for between 60 to 65 percent of its consumption in the United States. It is also used in battery components (lead-antimony), chemicals, ceramics, glass, friction bearings, ammunition and other applications.

Antiviral
Able to kill viruses

[Dr. Schulze]

Now specific, topically, the best thing I've ever used in the clinic is garlic oil. Now it's very intense, but we do know that garlic is one of our most potent anti-viral agents.

In fact, of all the research I've read, I have never seen anybody say there was a more potent herb, and in the clinic, of all the herbs I've used, nothing compared to it. Garlic is the strongest anti-viral.

Anxiety
Chronic anxiety and depression are illnesses that affect the whole person, including the way you eat, think, sleep, feel about yourself and your general energy level. It is estimated that over 11 million people in the U.S. suffer from varying degrees of depression, shortening their life span through lowered immune system function and contributing to health risks such as cancer or a heart attack. Although the exact relationships are not completely understood, nutrition and diet have important effects on how the brain works.

Those suffering from chronic anxiety and depression experience symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, anxiety, irritability, chronic indecisiveness, agitation, and sleep disturbances. These illnesses and the resulting symptoms are caused by an imbalance in the brain’s chemistry, specifically a depletion of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Persons experiencing extended periods of these symptoms should consult with a professional for proper diagnosis and recommendations for treatment.

Apitherapy
This cutting-edge therapy utilizes the medicinal application of bee stings to treat a multitude of bodily ailments, from cancer to multiple sclerosis. Apitherapy is the Latin word for bee. Bees are placed on trigger points associated with the health complaint and the venom injected is said to stimulate the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, a hormone with anti-inflammatory properties. Proponents claim bee venom has been used successfully for thousands of years. China is conducting new experiments, but the American medical community still considers it quackery and has no controlled scientific studies underway. There is, however, an American Apitherapy Society, founded by a Vermont beekeeper who claims to have documented hundreds of cures and prevention treatments, especially for arthritis.

Aplastic Anemia
This type of anemia is, perhaps, the most severe one can have since it is caused by a shutdown of the person's ability to MAKE blood cells. That means that, even if all the nutrients are present, the factory cannot make them into cells.

The only known, conventional, solution is repeated blood transfusions and eventually even that will not help and the person dies. There are medications that will help for a while but it is really whipping a deadly tired horse. Eventually, they will not work because the horse is dead.

It is now known that the most common cause of this condition is MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) and how early in life this happens is genetically determined.

When I first entered practice, nearly 40 years ago, aplastic anemia was almost unknown. In 30+ years of practice I never saw a case. However, now it is almost an epidemic. This is NOT a case of sudden evolution of mankind but a result of the tremendous increase of invented chemicals we are all exposed to every day.

Only the identification and elimination of (see Multiple Chemical Sensitivities archive) those chemicals (even foods) from the hypothalamic burden OR improving wellness (thereby increasing the horsepower the person still has to deal with them)-- see Wellness archive--or the glossary, will do reverse this condition. One would need a good Clinical Ecologist to help with that.

Apoptosis
Apoptosis (from a Greek word meaning the dropping of leaves from a tree) is a term referring to the cytologically observable changes associated with a process of active, i. e. gene-directed, cellular self-destruction observed in all eukaryotes. The process has been termed also Programmed cell death ( abbr. PCD ). Control of apoptosis is thought to be intimately linked with the progression of cells through the cell cycle and this process essentially guarantees a steady-state condition in which cell division is counterbalanced by cell death.

Applied Kinesiology
A "muscle testing" form of chiropractic introduced in 1964, practitioners also examine structural factors such as posture and gait and make suggestions about lifestyle changes. It is also a non-invasive therapy, wherein applied kinesiologists apply light finger-tip massage to pressure points on the body or head in order to stimulate or relax key muscles. Neuromuscular Therapy also includes a muscle test for diagnosis, then emphasizes the role of the brain, spine, and nerves to assess and restore balance of the body’s skeletal structure. Used to improve digestion, energy and sports performance and to ease back and joint pain, allergies, asthma, depression and headaches.

The different procedures developed by Dr. Goodheart and others in the International College of Applied Kinesiology are derived from many disciplines including chiropractic, osteopathy, medicine, dentistry, acupuncture, biochemistry, etc.., and are currently being used by doctors of chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, dentistry and medicine.

Aromatherapy
The essential oils of plants are used to promote relaxation and help relieve the symptoms of certain ailments. Essential oils are extremely concentrated fragrant extracts which are cold-pressed or steam-distilled from blossoms, leaves, or roots. These oils are applied through massage, mixed with water and used as compresses on the skin, added to a bath, or diffused into the air and inhaled. The essential oils should not be ingested.

Essential oils from plants were used in Atlantis therapeutically, and later in Egypt, China, Tibet, India, etc. In modern times, the term "aromatherapy" for such use was coined by the French chemist, Dr. Rene’-Maurice Gattefosse, in 1937 when he burnt his hand while working in his family's perfume laboratory. He had heard that oil of lavender was useful for burns, so he put the hand at once in some lavender oil on his bench. The burn rapidly lost its redness, the pain subsided, and healing was clearly underway. This led him to research the healing properties of various essential oils, and modern aromatherapy soon took hold as a healing modality.

Pure essential oils are expensive. Often a thousand ounces of the plant are processed to produce an ounce of oil. The bulk of essential oils go into perfumes and related fragrances, and their quality is much less than desirable for aromatherapy (less expensive "essential oils" are of this type). It is best to purchase aromatherapy oils from suppliers known to specialize in aromatherapy oils, and be prepared to pay for them. My favorite source is Young Living Essential Oils, (801) 236-6200, headed by the American essential oil expert, D. Gary Young; this organization researches and produces top therapeutic-quality essential oils from organically- grown plants. Two other good sources are the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy, Boulder, CO, (303) 258-3791, and Lotus Light, Wilmot,WI. (414) 889-8501.

Arsenic
  • Year discovered: 1250
  • Atomic No.: 33
  • Symbol: As
  • Atomic weight: 74.9216
  • Melting point: 817º C (28 atmospheres)

The silver-gray metalloid is rarely found in nature in its elemental form and is basically recovered as a byproduct of processing ores. While knowledge of arsenic dates back to ancient Greece, it wasn't until the Middle Ages that its poisonous characteristics were described. Metallic arsenic was first produced in the 17th century by heating arsenic with potash and soap.

Arteritis
Arteritis, as the word suggest, means inflammation of the arteries. Arteritis can affect large arteries, like aorta and carotid artery; it can also affect medium arteries or small arteries and arterioles. Some inflammation process involves all arteries, regardless of their size and hence is called pan-arteritis.

Classification:

The classification of arteritis prooves difficult and confusing. It can be classified as primary or secondary arteritis, or it can be classified as to what sort of arteries they affect. Primary arteritis includes:

  • Polyarteritis nodosa
  • Granulomatous arteritis -- Wegener's granuloma
  • Cutaneous arteritis -- Henoch-Schoenlein purpura
  • Takayasu's arteritis
  • Giant cell arteritis
Secondary arteritis includes:
  • S.L.E.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • malignancies, infections or drugs.

All arteritis involves inflammatory cells infiltrate into the arterial or vessel wall. This can be neutrophils, macrophages or foreign-body type giant cells.

Aspartame
[Michelle A. Johnson, ND]

Well, we have another deadly scandal staring us in the faces now, right along with dental mercury toxicity and flouride water treatments-the aspartame "mass poisoning of the world" scandal. The world is now swimming in this highly toxic chemical-over 90 countries are selling it as NutraSweet, Equal, or Spoonful. Over half of all Americans now consume it on a regular basis. The really sad thing is that both the FDA and the EPA have known about its potential, and now realized, detrimental effects for years and have ignored them under political pressure and kickbacks from the companies producing this product. The FDA is deluged with complaints about aspartame, five times more than it receives about MSG, sulfite, saccarine or any other additive. By it's own admission, more than 80 percent of all the food additive complaints the FDA receives are related to aspartame. And though many of our respected scientists have requested a hearing on the safety of aspartame, the FDA has refused to do so. It has never even asked that quantities of the substance be put on labels.

Read Dr. Johnson's article ASPARTAME: Sweet and Deadly.

[Dr. Garner]

Aspartame (“NutraSweet,” “Equal,” “Spoonful,” etc.), accounts for more than 75% of all adverse reactions from food additives reported to the FDA, and about 100 different symptoms attributed to its use; the widespread use of aspartame appears to be linked to increased numbers of brain tumors, and several books have been written on the dangers of aspartame.

Aspirin
Acetyl derivative of salicylic acid, commonly used to lower fever; relieve headache, muscle, and joint pain; and reduce inflammation, particularly that caused by rheumatic fever and arthritis. Known side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is often substituted for aspirin. Because of aspirin's ability to inhibit the formation of blood clots, it is also used in low doses to prevent heart attack and stroke and to control unstable angina.

Asthma
Asthma is a lung disorder in which spasms of the bronchial passages restrict the flow of air in and out of the lungs. The number of people with asthma and the death rate from this condition have been increasing since the late 1980s. Environmental pollution may be one of the causes of this growing epidemic.

Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut Syndrome are implicated in some cases of asthma.

[Dr. Christopher]

Asthma is one of the top killers in the country today. It is caused by the system being filled with waste matter and mucus coming from the use of devitalized foods or a nervous condition with irritated nerves. In asthma, we have the characteristic wheezing and dry painful cough along with difficult breathing, irritation of the mucous membranes in the nasal passages and bronchial tubes, constriction of the chest, and the spitting up of mucus.

Only by changing a person's living habits (especially diet) will permanent relief from asthma be obtained. Certainly the odors, pollen, and smoke will aggravate an already irritated respiratory system, but these are not the ultimate cause. There are several herbal aids that will give relief from an asthma attack. Tincture of lobelia and valerian tea with a little cayenne added will relieve the spasms.

For irritations of the respiratory tract, lungs, and bronchials, the Resp Free formula can be used: comfrey root (Symphytum officinale), mullein (Verbascum thapsus), chickweed (Stellaria media), marshmallow root (Althea officinalis), and lobelia (Lobelia inflata). Emphysema, bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis sufferers have been helped by using this formula either as a tea (three cups a day), or in capsules (two or three capsules or tablets three times a day with a cup of comfrey tea). Three to six drops of tincture of lobelia may be added to the tea for additional aid.

Astragalus
A traditional Chinese herb derived from the root of the perennial Astragalus membranaceus. In China, Astragalus enjoyed a long history of use in traditional medicine to strengthen the Wei Ch'i, or "defensive energy", or as we call it, the immune system. Regarded as a potent tonic for increasing energy levels and stimulating the immune system, Astragalus has also been employed effectively as a diuretic, a vasodilator and as a treatment for respiratory infections. Astragalus has recently become popular with western herbalist and alternative health care providers. Astragalus replenishes vital energy, and may also reduce blood pressure by helping to rid the body of excess water weight. It is currently being investigated as a possible treatment for AIDS. Astragalus has been used by Oriental herbalists for centuries for diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Recent studies suggest that it may help activate the immune system, thus enhancing the body's natural ability to fight disease. It has been found to restore normal immune function in cancer patients with impaired immunity. In fact, some herbalists routinely give Astragalus to patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It promotes resistance to disease, and may also prevent the spread of malignant cancer cells to healthy tissue. Other studies in China have also led researchers to report that Astragalus can be part of an effective treatment for supporting the immune systems of cancer patients. Two separate studies followed cancer patients receiving traditional Western chemotherapy and radiation treatment. These forms of treatment typically ravage the body's immune system and leave patients weak and susceptible to new opportunistic infections. Scientists have isolated a number of active ingredients contained in Astragalus, including bioflavonoids, choline, and a polysaccharide called 'Astragalan B'. Animal studies have shown that 'Astragalan B' is effective at controlling bacterial infections, stimulating the immune system, and protecting the body against a number of toxins. Astragalan B seems to work by binding to cholesterol on the outer membranes of viruses, destabilizing their defenses, and allowing for the body's immune system to attack the weakened invader. Astragalus also increases interferon production and enhances NK and T cell function, increasing resistance to viral conditions such as hepatitis, AIDS and cancer. Astragalus shows support for peripheral vascular diseases and peripheral circulation.

Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is a very common disease of the major blood vessels. It is characterized by fatty streaks along the vessel walls and deposits of cholesterol and calcium. Atherosclerosis of arteries supplying the heart is called coronary artery disease. It can restrict the flow of blood to the heart, which often triggers heart attacks—the leading cause of death in Americans and Europeans. Atherosclerosis of the arteries supplying the legs causes a condition called intermittent claudication.

People with elevated cholesterol levels are much more likely to have atherosclerosis than people with low cholesterol levels. Many important nutritional approaches to protecting against atherosclerosis are aimed at lowering serum cholesterol levels. People concerned about atherosclerosis should also read the section on cholesterol, particularly regarding specific dietary information. People with diabetes are also at very high risk for atherosclerosis. Those with diabetes who are concerned about atherosclerosis should also read the section on diabetes. People with elevated triglycerides may be at high risk for atherosclerosis. For a discussion about natural substances that lower triglycerides and may also reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, see the section on high triglycerides.

Athlete’s Foot
A number of different fungi can infect the skin and nails of the toes. This results in the condition known as athlete’s foot. Generally this does not cause any problem more serious than flaking or itching skin. However, it can be a source of significant infections in people with impaired blood flow to the feet, such as diabetics, or in people with impaired immune systems. Infections of the nails are more difficult to treat than those affecting only the skin.

Atom
Any one of the ultimate particles of a molecule or of any matter. An atom is the smallest particle of an element that is capable of entering into a chemical reaction. The atom consists of a minute central nucleus, in which practically all of the mass of the atom is concentrated, and of surrounding electrons. The nucleus is positively charged; the amount of the charge corresponds to the atomic number of the atom. In a neutral atom the surrounding negative electrons are equal in number to the positive charges on the nucleus. The number and arrangement of these electrons determine all the properties of the atom except its atomic weight and its radioactivity.

Atomic Mass
Atomic Weight; used particularly when describing a single isotope of a nuclide.

Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of a nuclide; all the atoms of a chemical element have the same atomic number; sometimes indicated by a subscript preceding the symbol of a chemical element (e.g., 1H). Symbol Z.

Atomic Weight
The average atomic mass of an element compared to 1/12 the mass of carbon 12.

Auricular Therapy
Auricular therapy, or ear acupuncture, accesses acupuncture points on the external ear to treat and control pain, dyslexia, and other functional imbalances. Recognized by the World Health Organization as a viable medical modality in 1989, this technique is known to be over 1,000 years old.

[Dr. Stoll]

The body is made like a Hologram. As you know, a Hologram is made by using Laser light in such a way that the film that is produced has all the information imprinted on every molecule of photographic emulsion on the film. You can cut the film in half and, when one half is projected, the entire image is still there. You can cut it into 10 pieces and, projecting one of the pieces, the entire image is STILL there! As the pieces get smaller, and smaller, the image gets more, and more, insubstantial. However, theoretically, if you COULD project one molecule, all the image would STILL be there--just VERY hazy.

You say: "What does this have to do with Reflexology?"

Well, there is a map of the ENTIRE BODY on the soles of the feet, the palms of hands, the ears (Auricular Acupuncture), the irises (Iridology), the teeth (Odontons), etc.. Theory states that there are probably maps on the SURFACE of every organ in the body. The "Homunculus" is the map on the surface of the brain that has been known by medical anatomists for more than 50 years.

Autism
Autism is a severe psychiatric disorder that begins in childhood. Autistic individuals generally have only weak contact with reality.

"You would be interested to know that only this year have they proven (with biopsy of the intestinal lining) that Autism is almost always caused by routine immunizations and resultant LGS. Autism, if you do not know, has increased by more than 900% in the past 80 years." - Dr. Stoll

Auto-digestion
The condition where the stomach 'eats itself' by producing hydrochloric acid when empty of food.

Autoimmune Diseases
Due to the enlarged spaces (caused by leaky Gut Syndrome) between the cells of the gut wall, larger than usual protein molecules are absorbed before they have a chance to be completely broken down as occurs when the intestinal lining is intact. The immune system starts making antibodies against these larger molecules because it recognizes them as foreign, invading substances. The immune system starts treating them as if they had to be destroyed. Antibodies are made against these proteins derived from previously harmless foods.

Human tissues have antigenic sites very similar to those on foods, bacteria, parasites, candida or fungi. The antibodies created by the leaky gut phenomenon against these antigens can get into various tissues and trigger an inflammatory reaction when the corresponding food is consumed or the microbe is encountered. Autoantibodies are thus created and inflammation becomes chronic. If this inflammation occurs in a joint, autoimmune arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) develops. If it occurs in the brain, myalgic encephalomyelitis (a.k.a. chronic fatigue syndrome) may be the result. If it occurs in the blood vessels, vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) is the resulting autoimmune problem. If the antibodies end up attacking the lining of the gut itself, the result may be colitis or Crohn's disease. If it occurs in the lungs, asthma is triggered on a delayed basis every time the individual consumes the food which triggered the production of the antibodies in the first place. It is easy to see that practically any organ or body tissue can become affected by food allergies created by the leaky gut. Symptoms, especially those seen in conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, can be multiple and severely debilitating.

The inflammation that causes the leaky gut syndrome also damages the protective coating of antibodies of the IgA family normally present in a healthy gut. Since IgA helps us ward off infections, with leaky gut problems we become less resistant to viruses, bacteria, parasites and candida. These microbes are then able to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ. When this occurs in the gums, periodontal disease results. If it happens in the jaw, tooth extraction or root canals might be necessary to cure the infection.

Autonomic Nervous System
A system of two types of nerves that oppose each other in their actions. One increases pulse and blood pressure, cools the skin, causes sweating, and activates the production of sugar; while the other counteracts these actions by slowing down the body. When we are under stress, the activating aspect of this system, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in. When we are relaxed, the quieting aspect of the system, the parasympathetic system takes over.
